I'm in the process of pulling the engine (1995 355) to take care of a few things and to do some major cleaning. In the process I've come across a few things that I will research but thought I could tap the collective knowledge of this board in the mean time....

First thing… what are these ports (tubes) for?

There does not appear to be any vacuum, on them (one on each side). Should there be a hose connected to them?

    What is this bracket for?

And last but not least, it appears there is a lining of some sorts on each of the lug bolt holes and some of them appear to be cracked. Some of them are so smooth they appear to be that way on purpose.

I looked (searched) and found a DIY on how to drop the engine. In that write-up it said to evacuate the AC, couldn’t the compressor just be removed from the engine and left with the car?

And how long should it take to drop the engine? I know the guys that do this all the time will say one thing and the guys that have only done it once will say another. I’m just looking for ranges.

The last pic is off the wheel inserts. If one is cracked you need to replace it. They pop right out of there. Sometimes they have a bead of chaulk around the top of them to keep water and dirt from getting between the insert and the wheel. I took all mine out when I had my wheels powdercoated. Ricambi sells the Hill ones----

Also note, there is a 22mm version and a 23mm version. The 22mm is for very early 355's. 23mm for everyone else. If you order on-line, be sure to specify which ones you need.

The bracket on the back of your clutch pumpkin is designed to hold the protective cover place. See part number 64 (bracket) and 63 (cover) in this picture:

Did all cars come with the cover? (part 64) Seems that all the pictures of 355's that I've seen, none (other than mine) has them.

There are eight of these 1 for each throttle plate. They are there to balance the air bypass flow, ie; to balance/syncronize the air flow at idle. You need a manometer to do this. If you loosen those be very careful when you retighen they are very fragile.

+1, and no need to touch them unless you get into intake balancing.

As for how long it takes, depends on how much 'extra' stuff you get into and how much time you can dedicate to the project. Mine is still out...

    Thanks guys.....

So, the open (not capped) tubes are ok. I take it these are used for symc'ing.

The missing bracket seems to be missing on a number of other cars so I'm going to assume mine being gone is not a big deal.

And I guess I'll be setting up a payroll deposit directly to Ricambi as I sort things out :) I'll make sure to measure the ones coming out to determine which ones I need.

Ok, I'll let you know how it goes with leaving the compressor in the car. I figure it's worth a little time there to not haved to deal with recharging the AC.

I work pretty slow when I'm learning. I hate making mistakes...ok, I hate making foolish mistakes.

One more question. The rear fender liners appear to be very crude glass pieces. A few of mine appear to have runs in the resin and the driver’s side front panel is missing the bottom slat. I think I can do a pretty good repair, except for the color match. Which brings me to my question. Would it be un wise to paint those panels flat black? I could smooth out the panels that have the runs in them and then shoot a coat of paint on them but they would no longer be original.... What is the collective wisdom on this?

I wouldn't say there is no need to touch them. It is a good idea to check the balance every so often, those ports are just the tap for the vacuum reading. You can start there to check to see if the balance is OK if it is then stop there. Doing this check is simple and won't hurt anything or change the balance just be very sure to lightly snug them down if you loosen them. But, if you are going to adjust the system you need to start with the linkage first and then fine tune with the bypass screws.

    Daniel,

I'll need to get some replacement bushings when I refinish my wheels. My question is what is early? I have a 96 GTS.
Do I just need to measure the hole size that the bushing fits into?
    Thanks,

    Steve
