I have a brand new die hard battery, topped up w trickle. I need to drive about 25-30 miles to shop to get alternator pulled. What do you think my range is?

Seriously, it is more about time than distance though. I would suggest shutting off any unnecessary electrical load and then drive around locally (with a jump box) and see how long you get.

You'll make it. Use the jump box to start it. Keep RPMs low, use higher gears. No radio, hand signals, no heater. Take the box with you. If it stalls, give it a few minutes, jump and go. Wear a good jacket. Take your AAA card with you for security. Stay off the 405 if traffic. Stay off the 405 anyway. Always stay off the 405. Avoid the 405 at all costs. Never leave home if you have to take the 405. Okay, maybe take the 405.

Ping yelcab he just did that on the 405 freeway too!

And if you are local you need to show up at our Stooge events. We have a "no stooge left behind" policy better than AAA

10 minutes? I've driven nearly an hour on a fully charged battery, might have gone longer but I made it to my destination.

Be careful, I ruined a pair of his flow cats and a tubi exhaust doing that. Once the ignition starts cutting out, it will destroy your exhaust.

Why make life more expensive then it needs to be? Flat beds cost money. :)

I say make a run for it, if you don't make it then call AAA if you have to. Live on the adventurous side.

Why not just borrow a 77 dodge powerwagon , put some country music in the 8 track and use an old wore out rope

Thx for weighing in. Disparate opinions though...keep em coming as the verdict is still out. Considering a midway stop with a couple hrs on the charger.

Ive been stooges, and I've met you FBB..at Vince's. You're the really fat guy that can't position himself to do a class 2 prep on #2 without bursting the buttons on your coat...And who spends more time by the buffet line than with wrench in hand.

I would never do it again. $4,000 bill for trying to save a few bucks on a tow.

Serious man. When my alternator goes, the time between the Battery light coming on and when I drift to the side of 405 is about 10 minutes. No more than 15. I was hoping to make the last 30 miles to Peter's but it was not meant to be. I too had a brand new battery. Good luck.

We ran a 348 with as light of electrical load as possible at night (driving lights but no headlights) for about 1+ hours before it pretty much died at an exit ramp, at which time we swapped in a new battery and ran it another 1+ hours until it literally died in front of the owner's house. 355s need more electrons to survive, but surely not that many more...

I agree with the premise that it is a time based issue more than a mileage based issue. My advice to owner at the time was to run as fast as possible with as little load as possible. Yeah, increasing revs will increase current draw, but my WAG is that just running the fuel pumps, instruments, lights, etc, over the extra time you spend going slow more than offsets the increased draw from the extra engine speed.

I'd risk it if I had to, but I'd have as many jump boxes as I could come up with in the front trunk and a ready excuse for the cops 'cause I'd be flyin' low. :)

Good luck. The aforementioned adventure in the 348 turned out to be a hoot in retrospect, although at the time it was pretty hairy because much of the route was through areas we really, really didn't want to break down in a Ferrari, of all things.

Edit: in retrospect, at the speeds we were traveling versus the distance covered, we probably did not go a full 1.5 hours per battery, but I know it was over an hour and ~100 miles... at night. On a full charge you *should* be fine. Emphasis on "should". But I'd do it if I were in your shoes, as long as there was a reasonable expectation that unexpected delays would not be encountered.

If you are closer to plugzit drive it to him in Redondo and have him fix it.

Yelcab, your battery was probably already drained before the alternator light came on.
I once drove 100 miles with a car with a 100% dead alternator on a pretty good (not new) battery. At night.
Ok, I did disconnect one of the headlights to save power. Assumption was to have max 15 amp draw on 75Ah battery, assuming 50% as max discharge, should give at least two hours of driving time. That time, the math worked.
Speed was the answer at the end as we began to distrust the remaining range :)

Smoked mine going into Shoshone at 140, made it all the way to Spring Mountain the other side of Pahrump. Kind of a bummer, too, as I couldn't stop at the brothel in Pahrump due to battery.
Yelcab musta' been playin' "Free Bird" at full volume!

He said 10 minutes after his BATTERY light came on. He was probably already running on only his battery for half an hour and just didn't know it. Just a guess.

AAA flatbed would be the most economical choice, IMHO. As others have noted, with the light already illuminated, the battery is already in a hole.

It's not about the money, and I have AAA. A flatbed requires waiting around for the guy to show and then hands & straps to scratch and ding. I have no hook. Clutch gonna get worked to drive it up on the thing..Just doesn't sound good to me IF I can drive it to shop w/o a prob. My experienced wrench thinks I can..several on here think so as well.
I'm going to find a midway place 15-20 mins into the trip to stop and trickle charge for a couple hrs. If anyone knows of a spot just off the 5 in Irvine/Lk forest, pls let me know.
