All of a sudden, my car idles very low at the start and sounds like it is going to stall for the first few minutes. I have rev the engine to move forward in first or reverse. Once I get going it seems to be fine and subsequent starts while warm dont seem to be a problem. That was happening for several days, now in addition the check engine 1-4 has come on and off intermitently. Any ideas.

Check right hand side (banks 1-4 ithink) airflow meter to see if wire is intact.

Sounds familiar,Turn of the battery for a few hours, over night is best. then restart the car the next day and allow the ECUs to relearn. Let the car idel with out touching the throttle for about 15mins. This should sort it out. If not then change over the air flow meters on ya 95 model (you have 2, so swap them) and see if this cures it,then If not change the plugs.

Do you know exactly where the battery shut off switch is located?

Open the trunk and remove panel on the passenger side and turn round knob to the off position, this will shut the battery off. Remember to turn it back on, start the car and let it idle a bit so the car can reset it's brain.

Update, I shut down the battery last night until this morning then switched it back on. The car started pretty good, still a little rough but not nearly as bad. I let it idle for 15 minutes then only had a chance to drive it around the block to see if the check engine light came on.

So far so good, but the real test will be to let it sit again all day and see what happens tonight when I get home from work.

    Thanks

Here is a thought, sometimes on startup my 355 will idle a little rough and will get worse when the fans start up. This leads me to believe there may not be enough current going to the ignition system.

Possible causes: The chasis grounds may be dirty/oxidized, notorious weak alternator or maybe even bad plugs/wires.

    Anyone??

I hope re-setting the ECU worked for you. However, because it's rough only on first start / cold start and not subsequent starts would make me look at the air pump located in the engine bay next to the right brake light.

When you start cold can you here the pump "whine" at a high pitch for about a minute or two?

Update: I have taken the car out a couple of times now since I reset the battery and joy joy, seems to be working fine. The engine light has not come back on and the rought start has seemed to disapear.

I wonder what caused this to happen in the first place.

I had this problem of low idle (intermittently) upon both cold and hot starts. Car would idle at around 750 rpm. Shut off, and restart, and usually it would idle correctly. Tried cleaning the Bosch idle control valve and seemed better, but the problem returned a week later. Replaced it and the problem went away for about a month, then returned. Through the able assistance of 91TR (Steve Magnusson) we figured out that it was the Bosch Throttle Position Potentiometer that was bad. It was intermittently not giving a signal that the throttle was at idle....so the Motronic gave no signal to the idle control valve. New throttle position potentiometer, and perfect idle on every start, hot or cold. :)
