What is the proper way to adjust shifter? It is driving me insane. I am adjusting using the three allen head screws. At first I wasnt getting reverse now I am not getting 5th or 6th gear. When I shift in those slots it goes to 3rd and 4th gear--but the rest of the gears line up fine. So does anyone have any tips?

I am no expert, but I am ready to start the ball rolling:

    1. What was the problem that made you want to carry out the adjustments?
    2. Did you mark the positions of the two flanges before you slackened the screws?
    3. Did you slacken anything else in the control mechanism?

I think that if you could get all the gears before you started (i.e. you were just trying to improve things) then you will soon get things right. If you can't get 5th and 6th, then the flange towards the front of the car has to be has to be rotated clockwise (with you looking to the rear of the car) and locked relative to the flange on the gearbox side. If the answer to step 2 is no, I suggest that you start with the allen screws in the middle of the slot range and try small changes from there. The selection will be sensitive to just a few degrees change.

Unfortunately I never marked it. I took out the motor about 18 months ago to do a service and had to take apart the shifter. So I put in reverse and tried adjusting like that but I am not having any luck. The only adjustment I am doing is the allen keys--should I be adjusting it from somewhere else?

Hopefully you will get some advice from the many who have removed the engine - I have not done that. This forum is full of great posts on the big jobs like that and the line up of the gearbox control rods may well be covered there. So you should search there. All that I would dare to say is that I'm pretty sure that you should set up with the box in neutral and the gear lever (of course) in the neutral slot. Tighten the allen screws in the middle of the travel of the slots on the flanges and see what you've got. Hopefully it will then be a case of "fine tuning" these screws to get the best selection in the gate. Hope to hear that you've "found" all the gears!

Were the selector rod passes under the car to the gearbox. There is a 17mm nut shaped end to the shaft, that is held in position via another 17mm lock nut. First check that this nut has not worked loose because this is the adjustment nut and lock nut. If this lock nut is loose that will cause the problem you are experiencing. This will cause only the rod to turn and not the stub shaft/block its screwed into that disappears in the box. So in a nut shell when the main shaft turns the stub shaft should to, but with a loose lock nut the stub shaft only moves a little if at all. Make sense?
If the engine has been removed this 17mm nut would have been undone to remove the selector rod. It takes a little time to adjust but its an easy enough process. Get some one in the car to select gears while you watch the selector rod at the gear box and you will see clearly what a simple processes it is and then make the adjustments. But first check the lock nut even though it may look like its all turning correctly, it may not be turning enough due to it being loose.
