A bizzare thing happened to me. While driving the other day my stick shift broke off in my hand. Turns out someone sawed into it about 80% through the shaft just under the pattern plate. It finally gave out. The metal shavings confirm this. Anyway, now I need to replace the shift lever. If anyone can detail just how to do this I would be very grateful. I removed the plate that has the 4 phillips screws. Also the small square plate at the base that has 4 allen head screws. I hope I don't need to go from under the car.
Appreciate any help. Hope I didn't piss off the MOB!

Now why would somebody do that?

I'm pretty sure that's not what happened! The reverse detent probably wore it out.

I'd try welding it back for you and grinding it round again for free just to see if that fix works on this Ferrari potmetal. Then you could send it out to be rechromed or painted. I bet I could even find you a rechromer guy in so cal. I think these parts are expensive but the fix should be cheap.

The 355 didn't exist when Hoffa was around(didn't he get rubbed out in the70's) so I think you might be wrong on that one. LOL Regards, Vern

Probably wrong on the date but the scenario follows!

Maybe he purcahsed the car under a "shifty" deal!

No way, I think it is the stress from repeatedly forcing it into second before
    it is warmed up. :)

Here's how to install a new stickshift: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=72446

And here's a picture of a Ferrari gearshift after 34,000 miles of no oil/grease on the stickshift itself (or on the shift gate). You should proactively smear grease onto your gearshift in the areas where you see wear in this photo, as well as on the shift gate itself where your gearshift makes contact with your chrome gate:

    Sparky,

    Never mind the Missouri.

    Where's that P-51 of yours?

I prefer to see that, give me a check out in it, and see how I do with ultra high performance!

Is 310 time enough for a check out in this?

Lives at the Nut Tree Airport. Check out: 310 is good mid-wt complex time. T-6, Twin Beach and Pitts S-1 are the best trainers. Lands more like a Twin Beach than anything else and can be like a Pitts at times. Come on over and have a look around. Just let me know when and I'l drive down. You have a pm.

Now you are talking, Sparky. That's a beauty.

I know there is one at Livermore as well, but have not seen it in a while.

I am 45 minutes from the Nut Tree.

It's a good place for me. The squirrels keep calling because they think I'm nuts!

We will meet there some day soon.

BTW, is that a 2 seater?

This proves you can escape from prison while pretending to drive a 355 from your cell :)

Great shots of the P-51! I was at Nut Tree about 10 years ago and saw a mustang there. I work for an Airline so I know some stuff about planes. Avionics stuff. Now if I can just shift my car again all in the universe will be right again.. Mike F355 #19/100

The reason it broke is because you wore through the chrome plating on the outside. The metal used for the stick isn't very good, cheap is how I would describe it. So once the chrome is gone the gate will go through the metal inside pretty quick.

Anyway it isn't a big deal to change it yourself. NoDoubt posted the thread on how to do it. The biggest difference for you is that the 355's have a shift shaft, and the 348's use cables going to the gear box, but other than that it should be pretty much the same. You can find a nice used stick for about $100-$150. You can have it fixxed yourself and back on the road in half a day.

I would skip the welding it together part. I went that route and it just ended up breaking again. So your best bet is to get a used one.

OK, I'll resign to the notion that I sawed my own stick shift off. Only took 2000 shifts. Gotta seperate the Sappranos from reality. I just have a hard time believing a superior car like the 355 can have this kind of flaw. And to top that off, I understand a new lever runs over $1K! Should be Gold Plated!
Anyone know where I might find one?? I have tried the usual online sources.
For now, my 2 hose clamps are working pretty good. Home Depot. $2. Ferrari hose clamps......$500. Priceless.
