I am in the process of re-painting my cam covers and spark plug covers with crackle-finish. (I re-did the oil tank today and am totally amazed at how good the aerosol crackle paint finish is).

I would like to ask if anybody can post a pic of their spark-plug covers so I can see how much of the "Ferrari", "cinquevalvole" and line script are non-painted. The previous owner painted the whole thing red so I'm not sure what's correct. I'm assuming the whole raised area is non-painted. Is that correct ?

    Thanks,

    RF.

Thanks Jeff. They look great. In your opinion, do you think that Ferrari painted them and then run a milling head across the top, or do you think they were masked ?

    Thanks again.

RF - I just painted mine while they were still on the engine...here's a trick.

When I repainted my center consol I used vasoline on areas where I did not want paint to stick (small lights on rocker switchs, etc)

I was going to do the same on the valve convers but "spreading" vasoline evenly would be difficult. The solution? Chap stick. I applied chap stick to the elevated Ferrari and lines and painted. After drying I took a straight edge wrapped around a cloth and just "wiped" the chap stick off. Perfect!

I painted them with VHT wrinkle red. Did not mask them. Used a utility knife blade to scrape off the paint then 150 grit wet/dry on a sanding block.

Before you paint, make sure that you get all the old paint off. A little difficult in the tight little corners in the lettering, then use a solvent to make sure there is no residue on the bare metal.

After I painted and waiteds a couple of hours for the wrinkle to develop and let the paint mostly dry, I scraped the paint off the ribs and lettering then I I baked them in an oven @ 180 F overnight to fully cure and harden the paint. THen I finished them by sanding them.

Thanks for the tips guys. I'm using a grit blaster on low-pressure to get the paint out of the nooks & crannies. I don't think my wife will let me cook the parts in the oven though !
