My speedo worked intermittantly then finally quit. I replaced the speedo sender unit and now it works fine. Check the sender unit connection first. I had to alter the socket before using it.. Very similar to an O2 sensor socket. I used my hand held grinder to remove a lenghtwise section about 1/4 of an inch wide. Then cleaned it up with a file. This allows you to locate the wire and connector out of the socket. The socket is 1-1/4 deep socket. I got mine at Sears. The sender unit is located at the driver's side of the transmission between the two braided hoses. Check your connections and fuse ( if there is one) first. If you do order a sender unit, be sure and order a new copper washer too.
Great advice thus far: You can also do an easy thing first: Take off the Speedo/cluster pod and make sure the cable is tight against the gauge. It is two screws to take off the pod and 2 minutes to look and see if vibration has caused the cable to become loose or disconnected. There have been a few cases of various gauges and lights coming loose - always worth a quick look. Rich
The lights in the dashboard. If the suspension warning light came on as well, it IS the sender on the gearbox.
And how do you easily remove the Speedo/Cluster pod? I have a speedo light that has out for some time.
this happened to me last year. the sender is located at the left rear wheel on the top with two wires coming out of it. it is a large nut. i purchased the part from ferrari $90.00 and had it installed when i did my next inspection. it was a 10 minute job as the rear wheels were off for state insp. hope this helps. before it failed it would come and go. i had the same problem with my 82 alfa years ago. same fix, new sender. buddy
It is about a 4 minute job - very easy. If you look straight at the pod - just below and to the right and left of the steering wheel / where it goes into the dash - you will find where the pod meets the dash. Just run your finger along the pod and the dash where it joins - you will feel one screw on either side of the steering wheel. Remove both screws. When you pull the pod off - move it/tip toward the drivers side window - remember there are many wires attached - so move it slow. There is enough slack in all the wires for you to be able to get in there and replace any bulbs, etc. Hope that helps, Rich
My 355 speedo sender failed recently, I have a replacement ready to install, but was wondering why these Veglia things fail so often? I had to replace one in my previous 78 308GTS and it was replaced shortly before I purchased my previou 87 328GTS...I have NEVER replaced one in any previous car, be it a domestic, Japanese or German. What gives? Maybe Ferrari should switch vendors for the instruments?
I would also like to say that, sometimes that connections on the back of the speedo can get loose, and cause the speedo not work properly. So before you replace the sending unit make sure that the connections are properly attached to the back of the speedo/tach.
New sender from Ricambi America...installed today, all good again! *Note: It can be replaced with a 32mm closed end wrench if, you loosen and move one braided ss line from the transaxle out of the way...You will have to loosen the banjo bolt. The closed end wrench should be the stepped type, where the handle is about a centimeter or two above the closed end.
