Yesterday when I drove off in the F355, my wife noticed some spots of oil on the garage floor. " HAH " was her comment since the purchase of the car was a sore point. Nway to get to the point, There are recurrent spots of thick, sticky brownish (but transparent on smearing) oil on the floor around the front right hand side of the car ( RHD btw ) about six inches inside the front tyre footprint. My ferrari mechanic who is based 700km away reckon's its hydraulic oil leak from the power steering rack. help....any comments on how dangerous this is and if urgent repairs are needed or can i wait for about two weeks when I intend to drive the car down to him.

The only oil around the front of the car is the powersteering oil. So.............it must be from the steering rack. :):)

It could possibly be leaking from the rack end, of perhaps the pipes that go into the rack could be leaking. A worn/blown o-ring perhaps? :):)

How mechanically inclined are you mate? Can you jack up the car, place it on chassis stands and have a look at the steering rack?
You will also have to remove the front underside protective gaurds. An easy job if you want to have a look at it. Perhaps the pipe fittings are loose? I have seen that before a lot. You can tighten them yourself if that is the case. :):)

Either way, it is not dangerous. Just keep checking the p/steering oil level till you get the car checked out by your mechanic. :):)

You guys are really great. The advise and reassurance is much appreciated. I've been lurking for a long time and really appreciate the posts in this forum. (I also have a Fiat 2.0Vt coop and the forum by Kayjay etc was just as great.). I think that every newbie entering the world of F cars should be strongly advised to be a member of this forum.

Also note that the power steering rack can be a pain to remove from it location. Quite tricky to get at in them narrow places. 4 bolts in the boot well, then the 4 nuts that hold it in the footwell, and then the hard work starts with the pipes ect ect. Yes you can check it your self but unless you are VERY handy on the spanners let someone who has done it before do the change/repair.
