I have a 96 355 spider on which the check engine light tends to come on. Manifolds have been replaced and exhaust is stock. Tired of taking to the dealer to keep having the warning light reset etc, I purchased the recommended Innova 3100 code reader (120- from Summit racing).

I downloaded P0116 (engine coolant out of range) and P0410 (secondary air injection system malfunction) and re-set the system. So far so good. Car is running great.

Took car to Virginia emission inspection and was informed that system was 'not ready' for emissions testing and that I needed to drive the car some more. Makes sense since some parameters need several drives.

I have driven the car on 4 days (city and highway speeds) with almost 150miles and according to the code reader the system is still ''not ready" for emissions testing (flashing yellow). I had it back at the service station and the state emissions computer confirms also that its not ready.

Will it ever be ready? Should I just give it more time? Should I reset the system again?

I need to do something bc my registration is already expired awaiting emissions testing. thanks. Nigel.

The manifolds are stock but replaced (4 times for the record). Had I read more I would have gone aftermarket. I will on the inevitable next time.

There were some discussions about drive procedures a couple of shops used to get the tests complete. I don't recall if they were talking about 355s or 360s, but the info is out there. Try searching on P1000 maybe. Good luck.

You're going to need an open strech of road but here goes:

What you are trying to "force" (or accomplish) is a "drive cycle". There is a LONG list of how to force a drive cycle on many everyday cars. I never found the exact criteria for a 355 but this will help:

Make sure you have at least 1/2 to 3/4 of a tank of gas for the Evap System to test.

When accelerating DO NOT floor the car, use 1/2 to 3/4 throttle positions but do not floor it.

On an open road accelerating at 3/4 throttle to 60 MPH and hold steady for 3 minutes, do not touch the brakes.

After the 3 minute period slow down to 20 mph without using the brakes and then back up to the 60 mph cruising speed. Again never floor the car.

    Remeber 2 things:

    1) The Innova will flash each system (ie, cat, evap) on the main screen until that sytem is done completely with the test.

    2) I know you are not in California but here you can have TWO sytems not ready (and flashing on you Innova) and you are considered ready to test by the state. I think that your state should be the same.

Also, you can drive with the Innova connected while you try to force the drive cylce so you can watch the lights turn solid on your Innova which indicates that you are ready to test.

Also, let the coolant temp drop before doing the next drive (maybe part of your problem as the OBDII thinks you are out of range) before doing the next drive.

Remeber the OBDII is looking for an exact set of criteria before it will test that particular system.

DO NOT reset again as you will start all over in trying to get your lights to go solid.

I read a drive cycle for a Ford and it was like 50 steps long: Turn on the rear window dfroster, start car, accelerate, cruise, decelerate........It was crazy!

Stay with it and hopefully the dreaded CEL does not come on before you are ready to test.

You may want to ask the Tech (in a round about way) how many systems you can have flashing before it is ready to test. I do beleive with the number of systems that your car has you are allowed 2 to be flashing (not tested).

    Let us know what happens.
