Evening all. I need to remove my starter motor. Is it possible to do it with the engine in? Big job or fairly easy? I need to replace the solenoid plunger and contacts as I am getting click from time to time and a tap with a hammer always sorts it so IME thats the plunger. Anyone else done this job? I have found a video on how to refurb the solenoid.
Easy to remove the starter motor, very easy to replace the contacts and plunger also. Recently did this to my starter motor in my 348. Near identical setup.
I had a similar issue and it was wiring when engine got hot. Was a 2.7 car. We pulled all wiring, cleaned and even replaced some terminal rings. Cleaned relays as well. Norwood Ferrari told me it was common for them to do that. Did not replace many starters, but mostly the connections over time. Food for thought. Good luck either way. Thanks all, will be giving it a go soon ! Pretty sure its the plunger as the little tap gets it going. Fingers crossed!
Well I am pretty sure the cover has to come off. Which wont come off without removing the exhaust. Thats going to be a bit beyond my abilities right now as I am doing this all in a single garage and its freezing cold. Engine coming out next week so will do it then.
How do you get the heat shield off - which the starter motor bolts are behind? I tried every which way and it wasn't coming out from above or below. The car is already in the workshop now so I will be going down in the next few days to take the starter off myself but I could not see any way it would come out without the exhaust coming off. Done the job today - 20 minutes with the engine out. There was no way I was getting to the lower bolt with the cover on. I found the copper part of the plunger (circular part) was very pitted. The terminals on the side of the solenoid looked much like new just some very light wear. I changed one of them. The other I could not get out as the bolt holding the stud on was very, very tight. I did not want to risk breaking the stud so as the terminal looked very good I left that alone. Is that the right thing to have done do we think? Other than that gave the engine and engine bay a light detail. Nothing too serious but a few hours with some cloths.
I guess! I have a feeling someone has done the job before and got the wrong plunger so the contacts were changed but the old plunger went back in as they clearly didnt match. Just got to hope it starts now when the engine goes back in
We will see what happens with that old contact still in place. And it sounds like someone skimped last time and replaced the contacts, but left the old plunger in there.
