The steering column on my 98 355 is very tacky/sticky. Is this a problem with the 355's? Any thoughts on how to fix it?

It can be either removed from the car or left in place and cleaned with either rubbing alchohol or simple-green using cotton towels. You'll have to sort of "scrape" away the tacky coating (much like removing adhesive residue) until cleaned off.

I recently cleaned up all the switches, plates, etc. on my ex-355 -- all it took was a little elbow grease and time.

If you use rubbing alchohol, be very careful around leather or the white silk-screened decals / labels.

Any of the plastic interior parts which all get sticky, can be refinished by cleaning them with a scotch pad and laquer thinner. Then spray them with Krylon simiflat black paint from WalMart. They will look like new.

If you would like to do it yourself - do a quick search - many 355 owners have been through this many times and some great details exist in the archives...

Thanks for all the advice. I do plan to do the job myself. Can anyone reply with a link to some of the technical artilcles mentioned? In particular, I'd like to know the steps involved in removing the plastic pieces prior to cleaning/painting them. - Brian

With regards to procedures, I personally never removed any of these items from the car -- simply cleaned them in place. These surfaces are painted black (very dark grey) already with a rubber coating over them from the factory.
