I know, I know. The engine sounds better. However, I own a mobile audio business and the car makes for great conversation and the people I'm around always ask what audio equipment is in it. Sooooooo, this past weekend we decided to get a little something into it to represent the business.

If anyone has done their 355 before. they know there are not too many options. I wanted to be able to turn back to stock if it ever needed to be sold. Display some features of product and still be clean and unobtrusive to the eye.

Here is what we came up with. The following will show the process on removing the tape deck. The placement and finished product of the speakers. And the obligatory car picture in the facility. Now that it is all done, it has full bluetooth capability and iPod integration as well as cd and radio.

Great thread! Did you put an amp in the trunk? Show some pics and how you ran your wiring.
Tips and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The rims are the Highline rims. They came with the car when I bought it. Main tips I have is the removal of the tape deck is as pictured, The Pioneer unit had removal tools. Those worked with the removing of the sony.

    The door removal.

Metal strip on the door jam
4 screws on the bottom of the door
2 screw in the front of the door
    slide lower half (pocket) foward
that exposes the 2 bolts for the door handle
remove screw in the top of the door handle
    remove door handle
1 screw in door latch pull towards you
The rest is pressure fit panel clips

If you plan on removing the tweeters from the dash, there are clips on top and bottom on the speaker half of the vent. Panel poppers can release the lowers and the upper can be released by rotating the ac vent upward exposing the underside of the top clip. A screwdriver under the clip can pop it to make it easier to remove. The tweeters seem to be rotate mounted on their tabs and glued there. Mine happened to have weak glue I guess and with a little coaxing came off.

I used the existing wiring using a volt meter to verify the colors to each side and then ran them through the crossovers. No amp was used as these are very effecient speakers and didn't require much power, so we just used the head unit power which wasn't too bad actually. This negated the need to mount and cool and additional amp.

Thank you for the wright up, very helpful.

What speakers did you use? (make and model :) ) and was there any need to modify the door to fit the speaker?

I'd love to know also. I assume the specs would be the same as a 348 since the doors are so similar

I used the Focal Access Series 165A1 components. These are actually their entry level speakers. If anyone is familiar with their line, their top of the line Utopia Series is based on their home audio counterparts and are around 6500 USD. I wasn't going to put those in unless acoustic treatment was done to the car.

The midrange was a tight fit in the door, no cutting was involved but the mounting ring they provided I put in backwards to allow for the deeper magnet. The tweeter mounted into the stock location with little modification. A perfect fit can be obtained with a little grinding from a dremel tool. More pics can be seen at www.dreamcarzaz.com.

Great how to thread! I never was able to remove that plastic housing around the stereo / gauges - any tips how to do that? Mine could use a clean + repaint.

    Thanks

My big mission is where to put some "rear" speakers in a 348 Spider

The one around the stereo is clipped in place and can be seen when you remove the face off the stock radio. As far as the gauges go. No idea. but I would think it probably uses clips too. May have to take a look and see.

I have been working on this problem I do not have it fully figured out yet but my car audio installer will, he has done 5 of my cars two for competition (and no I'm not competing with this one just improving the sound it's very Micky mouse right now.)

I know for sure you can get smaller stand alone tweeters behind your seats or near the center seat belt box then add same tweets in upper doors and finally increase the door speakers to a 6 1/4 inch mid range woofers this will dramatically improve your sound, as far as subs go still working on that too.

I will post in my "the arrival thread" when I have it worked out...:)

I have looked at the rear of my car and see a solution to rear speakers. Focal makes a 5 inch "sub". Put about 3 of these in a vented enclosure on the ledge behind the seats, it would give some sub bass in the car. A little un orthodox, but there really is nothing normal about this car.

There is a thread floating around with a VERY nice rear speaker box someone made but it wouldn't leave room for the top on my Spider

Does anyone have experience of fitting rear speakers or a sub in a 355 Spider? There doesn't seem like there's many options, but I'd appreciate any thread/photos of something that works and doesn't foul up the hood mechanism or seat travel......

An 8 inch subwoofer can be mounted in the passenger kick well in front of the fuse board, if the metal foot plate is removed then the glass fibre sub enclosure only takes up about 2 inches of leg room. If the speaker is rebated back and a mesh cover fitted then the enclosure can be used as a passenger foot rest for those late breaking moments. I shall try and find the pictures of the ones I used to do, with this and a decent front speaker upgrade with amplifier under the nose you really wouldnt require rear speakers plus the whole car could be put back to standard within a few hours.

I'm in the process of installing a new system in my 355. Alpine iPod Head unit, 4 channel Alpine amp and Infinity component speakers. I have the amp mounted in the trunk up front.
Looking for suggestions for running the preamp wires and speaker wires back into the cabin. I'm a little hesitant on drilling through the firewall. Not against it, not sure where to start.
    Open to suggestions.

It sounds like a good option - I too would (one day) like to get the car back to stock without complications

I am back in the office on tuesday, i shall see if i can dig up the pictures off my other computer. I used to do all the audio upgrades for Stratstones of Wilmslow and for R&D in Eccles, with 355 spiders being my babies i did quiet a few. I think i also still have the pictures showing the routing of cables through the bulk head into the passenger compartment for PYROGUY.

I saw a 355 Spider with the glove box removed. They built a box that was covered in leather and mounted right behind the seats. I think it had an 8" Kicker in it. It looked really good and sounded decent.

The had the mids in the door, and the tweets in dash. There were some flat spots as it sounded like it needed some bass plates as a filler.

Nick will be able to tell you where to find me, if its sunny and dry on saturday you could pop down and i could show you, i am only 5 minutes from there workshop, alternatively i could meet you there, any excuse to visit their workshops and make ferrari noises!

Can anyone advise how to remove the radio unit. I have removed the plastic panel around the radio and can't quite figure out how to pull the radio out. I don't want to force it out!
I tried the removal tools from a new sterio in each side but no luck.
I am also looking for a replacement OEM radio/tape deck and or the plastic suround plate if you have one--working or not I would be keen to buy it.

If you look at some very early editions of FORZA, the factory F355 MacIntosh-based system used a subwoofer box mounted in the front boot area along the rear wall with the sub speakers facing into the interior of the car. As subsonic frequencies are non-directional and are not easily attenuated, I think this location would be ideal. The amp was mounted on the bottom of the boot. At the time, it was a $12,000 option. I heard the system once at a car show, quite impressive, but not worth the $$$.
