I've read a lot of posts about how to replace, clean, etc. the sticky interior plastic pieces on the 355s. My question is this: Does anyone make a replacement for the steering column shroud? That is the only part that is really bad on my car, and I'd like to replace it. If no replacement is available, does anyone know how to remove it (for cleaning)? Thanks.

We're almost done with this part (in carbon fiber). We'll be glad to add your name to the list if you are interested.

    Yes it is very easy.

If I remember correct there should be 5 screws that you need to remove. They are located on the bottom of the collum cover. Remove the 4 (?) outer screws first. Those are the ones that hold the two halfs of the cover together. Then there is 1 (?) in the middle that holds the cover in place on the collum, or maybe it's 2. What ever the case, all you have to do is remove the screws and take apart the too halves. To get the top piece off you will need to lower the collum all the way down. Use the leaver on the bottom to lower the stearing wheel all the way down.

Then when you have the cover off the best thing to use to remove the sticky stuff is Easy-Off over cleaner. Spray it, let it sit for a while, then hose off the goop. Repeate as needed.

If it works thanks for the tip I'll get a couple of cans for the shop.

The Easy Off solution was posted a while back -- it reminds me of humans figuring our how to eat a coconut. I mean, really, it's way up in the tree and covered in a thick husk. Once you get the husk apart, you need to crack the nut, then eat the coconut flesh. What made mankind try that?

On the same subject, who figured out to pick coffee beans, roast them, crush them, shoot hot water through them, then flavor with milk and sugar??

Ya see, the Easy Off/Ferrari cleaning solution is just one more example of mankind's amazing brain power !!

I was at FatBillyBob's last week doing some more stuff with my trans rebuild. Fchatter Pugzit was hanging out with us. Billybob has his car completely stripped down for weight reduction, and I mean COMPLETELY. One of the vents was sitting there and Pugzit mentioned that Easy-Off works for getting rid of the sticky stuff. It just sooooo happend that BillyBob had a can of the stuff. So we tried it to see if it worked, and sure enough it did. We were only rinsing it off with the hose running. Pugzit said that the stuff comes off better if you used a high pressure nozzle, or compressed air to blow the goop off afterwards.

Cleaned up my shroud with Easy Off when I installed my Momo steering wheel.
One thing you have to watch out for is....

WEAR rubber/protective gloves. Easy Off not only removes the goo.. it will also remove ALL the oil from the skin of your hands...

ask me how I know ;>P

If you don't wear gloves, then buy a botle of hand moisturier that will last you a week.

I picked up the satin finish at Ace hardware and it is a perfect match.

Need instructions as to the best way to remove the interior door handle to spray it with Easy Off.

There is a screw under the handle and the leaver. Remove the screws, then slide the leaver off. You may need to remove the lower part of the door insert, the thing just over the speaker, to get to the other screw holding the handle to the door.

Instead of using the $30 bit that looks 'goofy', go to Ferrari and pay $1640 plus tax, plus shipping for the genuine bit.

    Regards,

Pete (I made the goofy bits!)

i think the idea of any inexpensive replacement part is great, my only complaint was that the color of black is not in the same tone as the rest of the panel, or the other black pcs. in the car. i had the same problem when i replaced the floor mats, the black was quite a bit off from the factory color. anyways, i have come to the conclusion that i will live with the sticky and not worry about it. cheers, kelly

    Kelly -

We have a "revision 2" design of these panels that is closer to the original black. You're local to Greensboro, right? Give me a shout and we can just hold one up in your car to compare colors. You shouldn't have to live with a melting interior in a Ferrari!

Thanks for all the responses to my original post about the steering column shroud. I removed it this weekend, and used the "Easy Off" method. Awesome!!! The gunk came right off with a thorough spraying with my garden hose (after sitting for about 30 minutes with the Easy Off).
A little Mothers "Back to Black" on the plastic, and I'm like new!

    I love this web site!!!
