Is this subframe made of a aluminium/magnesium blend? It is definetely not weldable with Aluminium filler rods(TIG), so anyone welded it with Magnesium filler rods?

    Or what is usable here?

Anyone who really knows this - Thankful for quick advice.

Are you talking about the subframe that holds the engine? The section that unbolts from the car when its removed with the engine? If so its made from mild steel bud.

Yes it is mate;) Welded the underside of one myself only last week, using a mig welder. In Europe because the climate is so wet, the underside rear sections can rust through.

How the hell can the enginecarrier/subframe be so light, and made of steel?

Those pipewalls can not be especially thick...

Get your magnet out and check it. It is just mild steel. How can anyone that calls himself a welder not know the difference between steel and aluminum?

I wonder what kind of mess he's made of your subframe trying to weld mild steel with Aluminum filler rod? If I didn't realize it before I started welding I think I would see the steel starting to glow when you heat it witht the TIG vs the mercury appearence of the Aluminum when it starts to melt? Might be a good time to look for another welder. I've found racecar fabricators are more qualified to do this sort of work than your average welding shop that tends to do more structural work and steel repairs. I'm surprized Ferrari isn't using 4130 crome molley steel instead of mild steel? If it's .125" or less in wall thickness you can get away with using mild steel filler.

Use ER70S-2 TIG welding rod and it is steel. You can use E71T-11 fluxcore MIG that works great on dirty steel and places hard to get clear access.
