What do you think might have caused it. I don't know much about transmissions but is everything not supposed to be tight and can't move unless its supposed to?
It did look like it was being pulled into the bearing and it did look like there was too much space between the crown gear and the case exactly on the opposite side of the failure.
Grant, We worked late last night to get your car back together and drive it around the black to check for shifting, so far so good. We will put all the panels on etc Monday morning and drive again so will speak with you Monday. FBB , when we have rebuilt the 20 plus other 355 transmission we have always found a failure that caused the shaft to become damaged in this case we didn't any thing other that evidence that someone had been in there before and done some repairs, the nut being over tightened was a theory based upon our inspection but cannot 100% say that was the cause either , anyway it's all back together and working well.
I kinda agree with Craig they r guessing because there is no other explanation but we do know it previously failed and my guess wold be that possibly this shaft was not 100 percent from before and maybe had partially failed and not replaced by previous owner. Thanks for the update Craig I am glad everything is working out. Now all I have to do is go to the casino and make some money lol. As Ernie said I would be curious about other failures just to share with the brothers this way we all, know what to keep an eye on.
So picked car up ran excellent transmission feels just as it did before, shifts perfect in both modes and now the vibration is gone. Bad news is it cost me more because I'm lazy and I had them put in the capristo headers and a new clutch since the clutch was starting to go. On a plus note they found three or four other problems that were Minor at this time but could have left me stranded such as faulty injector wire and f1 actuator was loose. My guess is us f1 guys like shifting so we shift as oftain as possible. Thanks to everyone especially RSO1091 for recommending Craig and FastCars I was very impressed with them and the staff.
