I'll be shipping my 355 across the ocean soon and was wondering if there's anything I can do to reduce possible engine abuse by the people staging and then loading the car. I mean short of putting a brick under the accelerator to foil "engine blippers" what can I do?

I suppose defeating the exhaust bypass valve (so it stays closed) might be a little bit useful. What about disconnecting the MAF? Would that be any good/make much difference?

If you disconnect the MAF they probably won't be able to do their job, it will stall out easily and they will probably fry your clutch to get it to move.

You may be able to adjust the throttle cable so that full throttle at the pedal is just barely opening the butterflys, that should provide the solution you're looking for.

It would be easier to affix something to the throttle pedal (not a brick) to achieve the same result without digging into the engine bay.

Let us know what you end up doing.

    Good luck.

For backup, you should have pictures of odometer, interior and exterior just before shipping, with telltale landmark signs making it clear these photos were taken just before this vehicle got on boat, with checklist.

Not sure about the MAF. Maybe I'll try disconnecting it first on my Saab tomorrow and see what happens. I would think the cars would still have decent power (75%??) with a disconnected MAF. It should just be running off of fixed air/fuel maps-maybe-possibly. Idle speed control motor may still work if its adjustment is based only on engine rpm/coolant temp. and throttle position switch.

I thought about messing with the throttle linkage but I'll have a 2+ hour drive to the drop off location and about a 5 hour at the distant end when I pick it up so.... not sure I want to go that route.

Attaching something to the accelerator pedal seems like a solution. Thanks.

Thanks for the reply. Good ideas although it's standard procedure for shipment like this. Joint inspection, documentation, mileage recorded, and in this case photos. The Marine insurance I'm getting is stupid expensive (IMO) so everything most be known/documented/agreed to, before shipment.

    Ditto.

I have two rules concerning my 348

Rule # 1 - nobody drives it other than myself

    Rule # 2 - that's about it :D

Not sure if you read the whole thread or not. I will be transporting my car by ship in a container. There is no option to load into the container yourself. In addition it's extremely unlikely I will be around at either end when it is actually loaded or unloaded. So.... I want to take what precautions I can.

Disconnected the MAF on my '94 Saab (OBD-1) today. Got a check engine light, as expected, but it started up fine and I drove a few blocks with no problems. You could smell a rich mixture so I didn't want to drive too long with the cat. in place in case it would overheat. Didn't see any black smoke or anything like that.

Might the same on the 355 next week.
