Hi guys - I'm considering purchasing a 355 and would like some input on what you all feel the car is worth. 97 355 Spyder, 6 speed manual. Triple black 36K miles Stickies have been taken care of Guides were replaced The only dash shrinkage is the passenger airbag cover (quoted at $240.00 to repair) Has a small hole in the top (top replacement with labor is quoted at $2500.00) Needs a full major (quoted at $7K) Condition is excellent, 8/10 Just had a PPI done by a very reputable Ferrari wrench and everything passed with flying colors. Has luggage, all original manuals, keys and very well documented service history. Headers, cats and exhaust are original. Headers have been replaced 3 times but are still OEM. Thoughts? Thanks, Matt
I bought my 355 last November. Back then there were numerous discounted 355s with service due. Biggest issue I had is that many were over 8 years and some cases 12 years post last major. That's a long time and if neglected for that job what else was deferred. There are a lot of cars for sale and if you're buying now look at the best ones and bargain with them. Better than dealing with potential money pits that ruin your experience.
I would not let the lack of a full major stop you from buying this car if you like it. At least you can take it to a known wrench who you know well. $60K-$65K
Is that what you have been told or have you confirmed Matt? That can often mean: A) The person has no idea what that really means... B) The parts have not yet failed (not likely) C) some parts have been cleaned and not refinished D) some parts have been poorly rattle can refinished If I had a dollar for every time I read "stickies done" and there are not, I could retire
If that's the car per Dave I personally saw the car in Atlanta. Stay away as they didn't even know when the last service was done so they completed it last year. They did the stickies themselves with an in house guy. They were asking $78 or so but could have discounted since I visited before thanksgiving.
Hey Matt, I'm in CT. Wondering who quoted $6k for a major. Drop me a PM if you would. As for the car, I'd say $60k would be top dollar. Around $55 would seem more reasonable.
The current owner and a fellow 355 owner did the refinishing themselves. He's owned 8 Ferrari's and has done the job a few times as a winter project. I only looked briefly but I felt around and didn't feel any sticky parts at all. Neither did the wrench. I'll look more closely though.
No, it's privately owned in Boston. Current owner has had it for 8 years. Last major was done 6 years ago. I have read the ownership and service history. It's all very well documented. Since being in Boston, it's been serviced at Ferrari of New England by Tony Fernando.
If I was selling my car which I am not I could say the stickies were done. Do they look as nice as when Dave or Robbie do them no, not even close. Are any of them sticky, no. Like many Ferraris we all have a different idea of what is acceptable. Look at many and buy the best one with a good ppi, everything else can be fixed. Without many pics or even better without seeing it in person all I can say is its worth between 55 and likely 85 k. Like any vehicle and after more than a decade I know mine well I could likely pic apart many 355 including mint condition ones. Best thing is research. Sorry I can not be more help but as far as I am concerned they vary a lot.
I would say 55-60k as well. Closer to 55k because you'll have to replace those headers and cats too. Eventually you'll replace the muffler with an aftermarket one as well but let's pretend you won't for now.
I've never seen Dave's work but I know he's got tons of experience and is highly respected on here so I'm going to assume he does a much better job than what my guy did. Let's retract the "stickies are taken care of statement".
FWIW, my 98 has OEM, original headers, although I only have 15k mile on the car. Eddie, most hate the OEM muffler but not all.
First it's a good color combo and it's the arguably more desirable 6 speed. If you have papers showing steel valve guides then the price should be under $70k with needing a major. This assumes the last major was no more than 6 years ago and the car has otherwise been properly maintained (oil, parts, etc.). It really should be more into the mid $60's but the tools/books/covers/etc. give the car a boost.
Just my idea, but I think "the way to go" is to remove the heat shielding from the OEM headers and then maybe ceramic coat them and add some heat shielding to surrounding critical areas. I would think they simply must last longer this way and can easily be checked, at any time, for melting/deformation.
I believe that's correct. The invoice just says 360 guides but I've read that's what they're made of.
My first 355 was on original headers when I sold it with 28k miles at 16 years old. My second 355 is now 20 years old with 27k miles and is on its second set of headers. The first were replaced in 2002. I budget for replacing them at any moment and when I do it will probably be with a new set of Ferrari headers or Tubi.
