I am trying to get some insight as to why someone would be inclined to purchase a 348 Speciale vs a 355. The price of the 348 speciale is in a range of an entry level older 355. Any comments, why would you even consider the 348? Isn't the 355 a far superior car. Any 355 owner that use to have a 348 that can comment?

For the record I have neither, but there could be several reasons, IMO.

    1) Looks. Some people prefer the look of the 348SS to the 355. Getting rid of the slats over the tailights and the chrome CR improve it the looks quite a bit over a standard 348. Maybe it was the car they wanted in high school, starred in their favorite movie, who knows. Completely subjective, so logic may not play into the decision.

    2) Rarity. Neither one would be an great investment, but the SS would be more rare than a 355. That alone may sway some buyers.

    3) If you were to compare apples to apples there would be a fairly large price difference. You could buy the best 348SS in the country for the same price as a 355 with high miles and a few issues. If the 355 was in the same condition it would probably cost at least $10k or so more.

    4) A buyer might be leery of the valve guide issue on early 355s. I have no idea of the percentage of cars that would/could have this problem, but it has been discussed here about 14,000,000 times.

For me personally, if I had a fixed amount of money to spend and it would buy me a perfect 348SS or a 355 with issues, I'd probably pick the SS. They certainly look the best to my eye of the 348s. A 348SS with the targa top off, rossa corsa w/tan is a gorgeous car.
