I remember the Commodore 64... It had that homely, boxy, sort of look, kinda like the 348! Kind of underpowered to, I mean the car of course, but hey in the day they were both pretty cool...
348's are for men ...... difficult to drive near the limit.... 355's are for boys ready to catch girls in front of 4 stars restaurants......
The Ferrari 348 Challenge was the first arcade version of racing sim with 3 screens on it. It had the full cockpit with the clutch and shifter. I spent many a quarter at the mall in one. They later came out with the 355 Challenge version.

The 355 is a freakin' amazing car! Together with te TR and the 348, they define 'Ferrari' for me. I can also greatly appreciate the 360 Modena. Anyhow, it all started with the TR in the early days. I guess it all started with Outrun on the Atari . When I found out I can drive a Ferrari, I started looking closer. I disliked the side-back of the TR. I love the 355, but I picked the 348 for it's comparisons with the TR. Furthermore I love the oldscool look of the back of the car. The 355 looks just too slick to me. I also love the TR stripes on the side. To keep it short, 348's the car for me. If I decide to drive a nother F it will be the 355 Some great looking car's above btw!!
All rivalry-kidding aside, that's a great story and I agree with you 110% (well except the 355 looks too slick, it is OK to be slick!)
