I am just curious, what you guys think how the 355 would handle itself in a friendly race on the highway aginst the AMG E55, 911 Turbo, and the Mustang Cobra.

How fast are we talking about? I think it would pretty much be destroyed regardless, but from a roll under 60 it would hurt a lot more since all of the aforementioned cars have an abundance of torque that the 355 severely lacks.

Then again, (as I'm sure many zealots will inform us) "Ferraris aren't made for straight line racing!"

At a dead stop E55 will be far ahead. On a roll u might have a chance, but look out for the 911 Turbo.
Base on experience stock ferrari 355 or 360 cannot stand a chance against E55 on a straight line race, unless u mod them.

The E55 and the 911 Turbo would destroy it from a standing start or a rolling start.

The 355 would be neck in neck with Mustang until about 60 where it would pull away with superior aero.

    Power figures:

    1998 Ferrari 355 (2976 lb.)
    hp: 380
    tq: 268

    2004 Porsche 996TT (3400 lb.)
    hp: 450
    tq: 457

    2004 MB E55 AMG (4045 lb.)
    hp: 476
    tq: 516

2004 Ford Rustang Slowbra (3664 lb.)
    hp: 390
    tq: 390

While some of these stats may make it seem like the 355 has an even chance, gearing and some other issues play out in the favor of the other cars. I hate to use 1/4 mile times as a performance bar, but we are talking about straight line performance here so...

    Ferrari 355: 13.0 sec
    Porsche 996: 11.2 sec
    Mercedes E55: 11.9 sec
    Crustang: 12.6 sec

We are talking about highway racing so assume your already going 60mph.

Puts mustang at the disadvantage. So its a matter of proper gearing for a 60mph start up to Xmph and aerodynamics. I would put the Turbo, 355/E55, then Mustang.

    1. Maybe
    2. No, not even close to 11.2 unless modified. Stock is more like 12.2 or so
    3. 11.9 If upgrade ECU + Pulley
    4. NO

Yeah murci is 11.7/11.6 The 355 is an older car it lack torque a better match for the cars listed would be a 575. The 911 turbo is a very quick car though that is easy to mod stage 4 = around 600hp.

The BMW M5 will take all of them but the Porsche TT.

I know the Ferrari would be the winner if someone asked which one would I prefer to own!

Acceleration is great but truth be told anything can be made fast..

Who cares about few tenths of a second?
In real life it will not matter much ,but at least in 355 you'll have the most fun.

A Dinan M5, but not stock vs stock against the E55. Even in the latest issues of Car and EVO they say the new M might not beat out the E. Family members have both and the M, such a great car, is really no match against that supercharged freak. Not claiming to be a racing expert or feel the need to pull out one more magazine quote, but have seen it with my own eyes.

    I think it would go... 996, E55, 355, Mustang.

And if the 996 is a Tip without the X50, then the E would win and the Fcar might be neck and neck with the Turbo. Why is a Ford even an option?

I agree as well. Those looks wont age as much as the sedan purpose Benz, the everyday Ford box that is soon to be replaced anyway, and the Turbo is being replaced soon.

i raced a 2003 CObra from a 10 punch in a 99 355 spider. the cobra had a chip, exhaust and pulley. it was dyno'ed around 460rwhp. it was slightly pulling. im suprised the 355 held as well as it did.

This is deffinately true....would much prefer the f-car. Although for the money the E55 isn't bad....i agree with all the post about the Ford....not even close.

Not close? If you're talking about the supercharged 2003+ Cobra's, it's more than close. I've driven 2 of them, and they're no slouches. The 390hp rating is pretty conservative, and actual output is closer to 420hp. I hope to pick one up soon.

Now i don't know the specs of the 355, but here are the Cobra's numbers. Close enough?;).

    0-20…1.3 seconds
    0-30…1.9 seconds
    0-40…2.7 seconds

    0-70…5.7 seconds
    0-80…7.1 seconds
    0-90…8.7 seconds
    0-100…10.4 seconds
    0-110…12.7 seconds
    0-120…15.3 seconds
    0-130…18.5 seconds

Florida is great. I know that I'll be called names after this but people who know me will tell you that I don't care. If you are man enough you'll call me names to my face.
All these cars I raced last weekend on I95 around Miami. The E55 was very close. Iwas doing about 70 or so we went up to about 150 we were side by side. Neither of us gained an inch. I was impressed by the power of it. The 911 Turbo was a disappointment. I thought i would kill me on the open road but we were side by side up to 140 or so then we got caught up to the others on the highway. The guy really didn't know how to drive in my opinion. I've never seen anyone try so hard and still not go by people. The Rustang was the one that gave me the hardest time. This thing sounded like monster. I am sure he had an after market exaust on it and the guy was a decent enough driver. As far as speed goes that thing had more then enough to keep up. He found out that the 355 moves around much better then the Rustang and maybe power isn't everything.

355 would get beat in all races, would take a lot of road for the 355 to catch the cobra too, cause it will get a lead and hold it till it tops out at 155. then the higher top end of the 355 will allow it to start reeling the cobra in. the porsche and the e55 wouldn't even be close. Just being realistic here

If you really want to go highway straight line racing get a Skyline and mod it to some ridiculous amount of BHP.

Or you could be smart and get a LPE 427 TT Vette(just be prepared to drive around town on slicks). But who really cares about straight line speed.

about those times. for the cars mentioned I have seen a 13.2 for the 355, a 11.9 for the porsche tt just because he mentioned the x50 hp rating. mid 12's for the e55 and a 13.4 for the slowbra, have seen a 12.8 though

That is pretty far off base, a conservative estimate would be high 12s. A guy pulled up to me and my buddy in a brand new 2004 Slowbra the other night (we were in his Z06) and the Slowbra gave us a run for our money.

My modified Nissan Z runs mid to low 13s and doesn't even get CLOSE to my buddy's Z06...
