Has anyone taken on a high performance jap car like a Nissan gtr at the traffic lights and outdragged it?

You'll get your ass kicked in a drag race. 1990s vs late 2000s technology

Yeah, even those early R32s that are heavily modified are seriously quick. I took on one of those last night, rolling start, i kept up to about 100KM/hr and then couldn't keep up. Didn't help that i missed 3rd gear!

.......... most of those J-cars are not that fast ......... it is a very rare occassion when one steps up that I know is faster, when even if I shift perfectly and he screws up ................ so when that rare situation arises ..................... I never give them a chance to find out .............. ;)

I've taken on a couple of challenges, most of the time I just wave and smile, but every now and then one comes along that makes me wonder, so away I go. I'm not a fan of standing starts for this type of thing, and they always slow down and try again while rolling, then its on. I don't care if I win or loose in this situation. If you can't handle being beaten by a car that cost 1/4 of the price of the car you drive then you brought your car for the wrong reason.

My car is quick and nimble feeling but I've experienced a 70's panel van that would take my car any gear any speed in a straight line. Seriously.

Acceleration is only a very small component of these cars.

(All of these experiences were in a closed road environment ;))

drag race on the street? what?? I've laughed that off in my modded STi when a Mustang pulled up...and I would've absolutely smoked the high schooler. In the Ferrari no good at all comes from taking a street race...if you win, you're the ***** showing off in a Ferrari. If you lose, it's all over youtube how your million dollar Ferrari lost to a Honda (because everyone knows all Ferrari's cost millions). Just wave and smile...

This is a very interesting topic and thank you for all your responses.

Sometimes i get the itch to blow away those j-cars, high powered V8 sedans etc. But the thing we've got to remember is that the 355 is a bit underpowered compared with todays modern 6+ litre V8 sedans and turbo cars. Many of these ordinary cars have nearly 300kw. I guess knowing when to take a challenge is an task I need to work on. In addition, we have anti-hoon laws in this country which means cops can take your car away if caught street dragging.

I have raced my fair share of cars here Darren. Have smoked a stock R33 turbo, stock BA XR6 turbo, stock BA XR8. And plenty more. I "won" them all, but im not impressed. If I ever pulled up beside a new VE GTS, it would eat me for breakfast. :D:D

Also, that was in the first 12 months of ownership, havent raced anyone since. Now I just smile at them at the lights. Of course they ALL want to race you, but im over that crap now. I still race around here and there, but not like I used. ;);)

Sorry for the response I am about to write but unfortunatley this is the way it is.

Firstly, I don't drag the idiots at the traffic lights in there Nissan/Subaru's/other crap. I have nothing to prove in my 355. If they have spent $'s on their cars to get that straight line speed who cares. You can't say if they beat a Ferrari then their car is superior. You have to compare apples with apples. The Ferrari is far better in every way so when I get these guys at the traffic lights I let them burn their tyres etc and I just take off nice and easy, no worries.

So in summary nothing to prove here. Far to mature to drag and do those sorts of things. Of course that is why I do track days because it is on the track where you can drive your car to its limits.

Dad and I beat an Altima in his GM Crew Cab 3/4 ton (turbo diesel, Gale Banks kit, 1000 ft/pounds) while pulling our Cobra on the trailer. Driver was more than a little surprised. I was in the passenger seat, so I got to experience the look first hand. It was one of those situations where the road went from two lanes to one lane after a light and the kid assumed we were going to be easy prey :)

    F1 helps in the 355.

a brick on the gas pedal will get a car up to speed in a straight line. It doesn't require skill. The question is not how fast you go, but how you go fast. I'd rather be second in a Ferrari than first in a ricer.

The only Japanese two car's I can think of that is faster is the quarter mile is 2007 GTR and EVO. The F355 can put down a 12.8 quarter mile time, Most modern sports cars are still somwhere in the 13's including the new 370Z Nissan.

OK, so judging from all the responses, here's the responsible thing to do when challenged at the lights by some J-car or other high performance 'ordinary' car:

    1. Don't engage in a street race. The Fezza is a class act and we don't need to prove anything.
    2. Kindly smile and wave to the challenger, and then take off slowly

However, I can't help but think that sometimes, I gotta use the power and blow those jap cars away.
