The rear deck and challenge grill on my 99 355F1 spider was HOT to touch after my 15 mile leisure drive in 70 degree weather. I'm not talking warm, but HOT as in don't leave your hand on it for over a few seconds! No running problems or burning smells during the drive. I have 14,500 miles and I am overdue for a major. No temperature gauge abnormal readings; no dash warning lights. Due for an oil change. Any ideas? I am now leary of going on some rallys in remote rural areas. This is the first time that I have noticed the HOT, HOT body.

Wait till you stop to buy gas on a nice summer day...bring out a glove to get the gas cap off....it will be hot! I have a rear challenge grill in mine and it still gets hot!

A clogged cat or an exhaust leak could increase rear bonnet temps.

How does one check for clogs or leaks?

Leaks you should be able to hear a ticking noise and maybe even see some black carbon buildup where the leak is on the outside on the area.
Clogs I would say a loss of power, a CEL maybe..

With a clogged cat, many times you can actually feel the difference of pressure when putting your hand behind the two sides of the exhaust.

355's will typically get white strands or debris in the engine bay and/or out the tailpipes when the exhaust manifolds spring leaks. You'll be able to smell exhaust fumes in the engine bay, too.

If you have a laser thermometer that goes high enough, then you can compare the temps of your two cats to see if you have a cat problem (or just note if both cats have very high temps).

Bad cats can also rattle. Exhaust volume can be different between sides, too.

Yeah, and don't even "think" of checking the oil level with bare hands!! LOL

I would think one could feel a difference......one way to see that would be to do some spirited driving at night....pull over (preferably in a dark area) and take a look at the cats to see if they are glowing. If one is and the other isn't.......
