SoCal Yard Find: 1957 Porsche Speedster

 

This guy pretty much hit the nail on the head, "Only the brave, stupid or both need apply. That’s going to be a task to set right. That’s a 300K restoration if you want a concours car in the end… and you still won’t have matching numbers."

 

It's restorable, although the money involved would certainly put someone upside down. I was lucky to have bought mine well in 2009 and signed a fixed-price restoration contract. I think a lot of guys just fall in love with the car and view it as a quest, not an investment. There really isn't anything else out there from that era that's so iconic, stone reliable and fun to drive.

I hope someone resurrects this one. The feeling you get from starting the engine on a fully done car brought back from the great beyond... nothing like it.

$80K-$100K is normal, at the moment, for a project Speedster. All of them need to be stripped to bare metal and panels replaced as needed. Floors and even longitudinals are all replaceable. (Mine are original, but the door bottoms and battery tray needed replacing -- didn't know about the doors till the car was bare.)

I wonder how someone could be so clueless as to leave it outside all these years, though. Speedster prices have been pretty strong since the '80s, and borderline insane since 2010. You'd really have to know nothing about cars.

On another website, a kid is putting money into a 'regular' 924. He has his own thread. Pictures were posted and NOS parts were also displayed. Several people tried to explain but reason was put aside .

 

Mmm- I've restored one this bad at least . It was a 56 beehive and I fell in love with it at first sight. It had so many holes it was like Swiss cheese. All done for $150,000 inc Engine and trannie full rebuild . We even made a new front and rear clip on English Wheel. Took 4,000 hours total over 3 years- ouch but amazing car which when sold put me in front plus gave me a ton of enjoyment . Now doing my 5th 356 resto

 

I think the sharp market rise we've seen the past several years has run its course. My resto was begun in 2010, and while I did well on it I wouldn't expect to repeat that.

But worth it regardless - incredibly fun to drive.

 

I think Speedster prices are just resting for a bit... they will firm up again when some really good restos test prices. Pre A Coupes seem flavour of the month at present. I was offered a Pre A cab about 5 years ago in pieces but complete for $30k. Damn it got away when I blinked...

 

Some club racers parts and the car got snagged before the end of the auction...Hmmmm maybe there is more of a story here (or just someone with a big checkbook).

 

Amazing to see a car like that left outdoors to rot.

 

This car ended up at a shop in Tucson AZ. for a restoration.
It should have gone to do it yourself hobbyist
