I had a scary thing happen while driving. A LOUD pop in the cabin, some electrical burning smell and check engine light come on at the same time. CEL went off within 20-30 seconds and car seems fine. I was over an hour from home and car drove fine, no more issues.

So what I THINK happened is the battery moved a little when I went over a bump and shorted out on the bar that holds the footrest. The car came with a Odyssey 34R - PC1500T battery which just looks too big, there is only 1/8" (maybe 1/4" but I doubt it) between the footrest and its impossible to put the battery hold down, its just too small for the bigger battery. I know others here have this battery, any issues ? I am thinking of throwing away this 5 months old Odyssey and going to a smaller proper sized battery. For now there is heavy felt near all the possible touch points and a block of wood between the battery and the footrest, so its not going anywhere but that is a VERY temporary thing just to keep the car on the road while I fix it properly.

One question is where are the terminals supposed to be ? near the footrest (towards the back of the car) or up front by the firewall ? Reason I ask is that the cables seem long enough to put the terminals towards the front and that may be my issue.

I will look into making a new battery hold-down since I have nothing, the dealer when I bought the car tried to fit a stock one and it would not work they said (I believe it), that will hold the battery down solid but battery contacts will be awfully close to metal and I am worried.

I made some "z" shaped clips and spacers that bolt to existing screws in the battery box floor. I had to re-arrange the battery cable routing above the battery but everything fits. The tangs on the bottom edge of the battery slip into the battery tray on the trunk side and these clips hold the bottom of the battery toward the rear (pass footwell) side. Works Great!

Oh yeah, you can remove the 'L' bracket and the 2 long screws that came with the car. There is an optical dillusion in the pictures, the support for the pass foot panel is NOT close to the battery terminals.

I think I wrapped the footrest bar in electrical tape on mine... Just to be sure. I used n interstate as well with the vent.

I should take a pic of my battery, that bar that holds the footrest almost touches the terminals as it slides past it. I actually have to remove the cables because they will not slide under the bar when attached. Based on that picture, I think my battery is 1" to 1.5" taller than the interstate. I see it recommended here but I think its too big.

The wood block between the bar and the battery seems to have done the trick, drove several hundred miles over the weekend with no issues but even I (mickey mouser extraordinaire) think that is a very temporary fix, I like those brackets you made and will make them this weekend if I keep this battery. Its a shame to throw it away, the last owner paid a lot of it and its only 5 months old.
