    Trying to help a local fellow enthusiast diagnose a CEL that popped up about 100 or so miles after he purchased an
    ‘04 360.

    The only code present is P0431. I don’t own a 360 so I am not real confident what I am looking at but I assume those are the upstream O2 sensors in the photos?

    The aft O2 sensors (after the cats) are connected. Thoughts on what someone was trying to accomplish here?

    I pulled up the exhaust schematic. Disregard the photos. Those are not the upstream sensors. Is 0431 a bad cat maybe?

    Have him swap the downstream sensors from side to side to see if the code moves. If it does, it could very well be the sensor. If not, then it might be a bad cat.

    P0431 is for "Cat Heating"

    LH CATALYTIC CONVERTOR HEATING ( P0431 )
    An insufficient temperature for optimizing the catalytic converter operation has been detected

    ERROR TYPE
    Minimum threshold exceeded

    VERIFICATIONS

    Wiring / component intactness check

    TOPOLOGICAL
    ECU FOR LH BANK CATALYTIC CONVERTER CONTROL

    Swap the LHS Cat ECU with the RHS Cat ECU. If the fault becomes P0421 its the CAT ECU itself (very common).
