Took my car for a spirited drive, it was awesome but when I got home the car wouldn't go into reverse, i put it into first and then neutral and tried to put it in reverse and wouldn't do it, I turned the car off and then on again and still wouldn't go into reverse, I tried every thing and it would go into first and second but no reverse, finally after 5 min it went into reverse. I reversed into my garage and went back and forth a few times and it did it again, but this time went into reverse in about a min, any ideas why, any help would b appreciated, it's a 2001 360 spyder. Thanks guys

My daughter said my car did the same thing after a long drive.
After it cooled a few minutes it was fine.

I think it's to do with the PIS being a little too tight.

That would be my guess. People think tighter is better but it has potential pitfalls.

Thanks guys, the only thing that I did different was that I drove the car in sport mode for most of the drive, after reading on here how the cars shifts better in sport mode. Wow did it ever drive different, it was awesome and I admit I drove it like a Ferrari. I don't no what the PIS is on the car, the dealership said it was right last time I was there. Mayb I drove it hard so something got hot, hopefully u guys are right. What should the PIS b at? I'll ask the dealership next time I am there.

My 2001 F1 360 would not go into reverse after a spirited drive in the sport mode. This happened twice. I had my car checked out. F1 fluid, PIS, clutch wear, etc. The only thing we could come up with was a plastic piece for the reverse lever was worn or maladjusted somehow. The problem went away a couple of months ago and has not returned. I didn't change a thing. I don't know why. Good luck.

I've had the same problem; I took it to my dealer, they checked everything, SD2 showed no faults - but they gave me a good tip which has certainly worked:

If it doesn't go into reverse, put it into first and then, without putting it into neutral first, simply pull the reverse lever back. That has worked every time.

They gave me a good technical explanation for it but I didn't understand it and certainly can't remember it.....

So is it better to go straight from rev. to 1st, and vice versa?
I assumed that going to neutral was better for the transmission, so I always went to neutral in between changes (if I had enough time).

When everything is working fine, I always go into reverse via neutral.

It's only when very occasionally it won't go into reverse I leave out neutral and go straight from 1st.

Perhaps someone much more technical than me can provide a possible technical explanation?

Yes, if the Point of Initial Slip is set a little tight, the tranmission may still be slightly driven by the clutch even though the clutch is decoupled. The system sees that the gearbox is still turning and will not engage reverse.
I believe there is a reason for a tight PIS setting - if it is not, you may have issues with hill starts or even slight inclines.

If you go directly from 1st to reverse, the gearbox will not have time to spin back up even with a little slip from the clutch. That is why that procedure does work while going through neutral does not. Makes perfect sense.
I cannot think of any benefits of selecting neutral first when going from 1st to reverse over switching directly. If possible, do select neutral when standing still for a while.
