Guys, I have a 2000 360 that had some weird symptoms and testing indicated that we had an ECU problem. I took both ECU's out along with the key fob, immobilizer ecu's and sent them to specialized ECU. They called and said that one is indeed fried. Their only suggestion was to buy a "reman" unit from them for 6K, wait until they finish the units they are making from scratch or buy a used unit and they can flash it. I am not crazy about any of these options but am not sure what else to do. I have read a lot about these ECU's and believe there are some issues with using used units, different part numbers, different software versions, etc. Can anyone tell me exactly what number on the ECU I should be looking at? Also, do I need the exact same number or can I use a different number. I did find someone that "claims" they have a new unit but I believe its a different number. Any advice or help would be very appreciated. Also, if anyone has an ECU for sale apparently I am in the market. Thanks!

From memory you have 2 ECUs , 1 for each bank that are in engine bay and one ecu which cintrols them both. I havw a full set of the 3 ecus and key as well i think.

P.S. Hope you also know that the imobiliser system has the hidden battery operated alarm that goes behind the bulkhead. If car is not used for a while or the alarm is old, it will leak the ni cd batt and that in turn fries the alarm circuits. When this happens it takes off the fuse for alarm each time you turn on ignition.

A good starting point would be the part labels on the underside of the ECU. This will tell you what the original software version was when your car left the factory. That being said, depending on the year of your 360, they could have received an update from the dealer at some point. If you can get specialized ECU to send you the flash file they pulled off your ECU, I can tell you what version is actually running on your original computers.

Perhaps English is not your most proficient language.

Your picture shows two Engine Control Units, 1 left bank, 1 right bank, and they are identical.

There is not a third ECU, but an Immobilizer Controller. The two other boxes that are in your picture are those. The big box is the immobilizer box, and the little box is the wireless transceiver for your key fobs. The immobilizer talks only to the right bank ECU and enables its function when all things are good. The right ECU (master) then enables the left ECU (Slave) to come on line.

Not exactly : the big box contains the fobs receiver, locking/unlocking functions, alarm functions (including starter motor disabling on manual cars) and immobilizer functions.
The little box is "just" an interface between the big box and the RHS ECU for the immobilizer signal.

I still don't know why they used this architecture, other than to use a more complete Bosch alarm/Immo system and to simplify it. Interfacing directly the big box to the ECU should have been possible. The little box can obviously fulfill other functions.
