So everything was running beautifully for the past 2500 miles (since I bought the car), then all of a sudden -- POW, out of the blue, everything goes to hell in 30 seconds.

I hear a noise from the right side of the engine (while driving) ... sounds like a high-pitched whirring that went away between gear shifts, so I pulled over to a gas station, shut down, and when I started back up the F1 light is blinking and the car won't go into gear. Up until then things were running flawlessly -- no bad shifts, no grinding, no power loss, no bad smells, etc. Smooth as silk.

The SD2 is reporting the following (all "present" errors)

GEARSHIFT SWITCH LOCK / STEERING WHEEL LEVERS SWITCH LOCK
PUMP RELAY / SHORT C. TO GROUND
    CAN LINE ERROR / INSTR1
    ENGINE REVOLUTIONS FROM CAN
    ENGINE REVOL. / NO SIGNAL
    CLUTCH CLOSED OVER PIS / CONT : ; 1

The car is in very capable hands right now, but I'm just trying to ease my tortured mind. Anyone have any ideas what this could be?

Sounds similar to my F1 last year.

In the fairing at the back, on the right is the pump for the F1 hydraulic system. THis is about 5 inches long and 3 inches diameter and can be seen through the gaps in the black engine guard. As parts go it is a known issue and when it "goes" there is a high pitched whirring sound.

The dealer who replaced mine said that every dealer carries these pumps in stock since they are known weakness. Not enough to go for a recall but enough to diagnose quickly.

Good news it is a 2 hour job to fix.

Bad news the parts cost for such a small pump was £1000! My plumber could get a similar spec one for £50!

Yep. I reckon Izza is right.

The electric motor is basically like a windcreen wiper motor. The pump itself is most likely OK, but the motors melt down.....but of course you can't buy just a motor, you need the whole lot!

You'll be pleased to know the new motors are different in appearance, in that they have a different shape to the casing. I've had no problems with the New type., although I've also modified most of the race cars to have an air intake louvre a bit like a 288 GTO in that area to help cool the motor.

What most likely happened is that the motor failed, blowing the fuse for both it and maybe the F1 relay, meaning no gears. When it happened initially, there was still pressure in the accumulator giving you enough shifts and clutch applications to come to a halt at the gas station.

Fear not, although 2 hours to replace the motor/pump, bleed it all through, delete errors and test systems is a bit optimistic for a thorough job. Allow 3 or 4, and 7 or 8 if the actuators need bleeding, which means pulling them off the side of the gearbox to get to the bleed screws.

Terrific. Thanks for the input guys -- and glad to hear it's a known issue (of sorts) and that the car won't be down for weeks and weeks. Luckily, I purchased an extended warranty for the car not too long ago, and this is exactly the sort of thing that should be covered.
