How does the vacuum activated exhaust baffle work? With the two exit pipes coming from the muffler, it appears to simply shut one down. Is it the exhaust having to flow through one exit pipe what reduces the sound? Then, when there is vacuum, is the second exit pipe is opened, reducing back pressure and raising the sound level? If a car didn't have the vacuum assist, could one shut down (temporarily) one of the exit pipes (per side) manually and drive the car without harm? I read where you can drive a 360-F430 to redline without having the cutoff open, if run up gradually.

Engine vacuum is what holds the tail pipe valve in the normally closed position. With the engine shut off and no vacuum to the pipe valve it will be open. Under heavy acceleration the engine makes very little to no vacuum and the valve opens up and reduces exhaust system backpressure, and makes a more noise. An easy performance improvement is to pull the vacuum hose off the valve and plug it off. That way you have the exhaust in the full open position all the time. Some say you may lose a bit of low end torque, but people who have actually done this say it improves things all around.

Where exactly is the valve or valves located. I do see two exhaust solenoids - are you referrring to these?

    Thanks
