Had a similar answer from Shell (HK) We have Spirax S5 ATE 75W-90 recommended for Ferrari but not a LSD oil. Our distributor (Gold Star - Tony Tsang 93599195) is able to sell to the public users. For supply of LSD oil, please ask customer to provide relevant pages of car manual for further advice. All that really means is it does not have an LSD additive already added. If LSD chatter occurs, a little (very little) LSD additive usually solves the problem without making the synchros too slick.
Well said. Also funny how the oil company boffins get hung up on whether it's LSD or not. This is NOT the issue we are concerned about here. Talk to one of them about the GL-4/5 spec oils and the effects on brass synchros and get ready for the blank stare.
True. I've just bought a 20L drum (smallest I can find these days) as I figure I can now afford to change the oil regularly. I also have significant and noticeable low-speed chatter from the rear so I will post updates once the oil has arrived and it's in the Tx box.
It's GL5 so.... Several good runs with the Redline MT90 GL4 now and all is good. Definite shifting improvement over the GL5.
Year old data point regarding use of GL-5, but post #10 in this thread is informative https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/interest-in-shell-spirax-s5-ate-75w90-usa.520178/
Idk. This gearbox, hypoid gear issue has me perplexed. I switched from royal purple after reading this thread. Seems choices are: 1- use gl4 with enough friction modifier to stop diff chatter. I worry that just cause I don’t hear diff chatter is that enough insurance I won’t cause diff damage? If I add to much could it be worse for sincros than a gl5? 2- Or pick a gl5 and roll dice on sincros. I tried to pick a good gl5. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Not to raise a dead thread but I will... I'm about to do my service and wondering if anyone has more thoughts on this subject? I noticed we can get Agip Rotra from ricambi now. Anyone going that route? I am thinking I'll stick with what my car's previous owner used which was redline ns and some friction modifier if need be. Or are there enough using the GL4 that the consensus is to go that route?
I used GL4 on my last change. The synchros work more smoothly and I’ve not gotten any chatter from the diff. I will probably use it again on this year’s change. Sent from my iPad using FerrariChat.com mobile app
I have a case of rotra lsx but haven't changed it yet ...hope to do in a month or so when temps are higher here https://oilproducts.eni.com/en_GB/products/automotive-lubricants/small-boats/gearbox-and-inverter-oils/eni-rotra-lsx-75w-90
So this seems to be the best we can do at this point? https://www.amazon.com/Red-Line-50304-Transmission-Transaxle/dp/B000CPCBEQ
Either that or what I mentioned above your post I did a summary way up that basically lays out the choices with pro and cons Sent from my Moto G (4) using Tapatalk
With the redline gl4 is there a chance you’ll need friction modifier? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Each car is different ..even within same line ...I would start out without any FM and then drive it for a little while and in an open parking lot do full lock turns ..right and left ..if chatter add 1.75 ounces Sent from my Moto G (4) using Tapatalk
Tiny bit of chatter here with Redline GL4 when cold turning on full lock. Goes away when warmed up. It's fine, barely noticeable and friction modifier inhibits synchro operation as it is too slippery. So none of that for me.
So after a 7 page debate, how many people are changing to a GL4 such as Redline MT90 from GL5 like Redline 75w90NS ? Very curious.
Ok, I'm going with Redline GL-4 on m I just ordered a case of Mt90... should set me for the next three years... I hate how much cheaper it was to get a case on amazon... couldn't pass it up.
I’ve put the Eni Rotra in mine and first impressions are very positive over the Shell S5 Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Glad to hear since as I mentioned above will be doing the same soon Sent from my Moto G (4) using Tapatalk
I went the same route. Easier for me to access since I'm in Europe - just hope it will work properly.
