360 F1 Kilometre (miles) cluster showing 555555 (again:(

Same problem as last year again after long time winter storage

Some history; happen first time (2009) when the car had been stored in my garage for some months, maintenance charge was on (C-Tech) and battery switch in the luggage compartment was ON. When put the ignition on, a big X appear in the display and several other alarms, most likely the same as now, the gear indicator was not lit-mileage indicator not lit etc, ASR -fog light alarm in display etc.

I started a thread on this forum, removed the cluster, it was first sent to a person in Norway, he was not able to put the correct mileage on, but his feedback was that there was some humidity affecting a card (s) (boards) where he discover some oxidizing, he clean that (to my understanding- but he was not able to put the correct mileage back). I believed at that time that the cause was the battery charger since the battery switch was ON in the luggage compartment, but this can not be the case, since it was OFF now…

I then ship the cluster to F.A.I. after forum member’s recommendations’, speed and service and I got it back with correct mileage (and I was then a "happy" man). I am not sure what F.A.I. replaced, but it could be that since the cluster was already cleaned in Norway prior to the shipment that they didn’t see the cause of failure?

I use the car for a limited time last season (season is short in Norway) in addition to the fact that I was working for quite a while abroad during the season, end of the season (late Aug. 2010) I got another issue with a multiple misfire, and parked the car in the garage, this time with the maintenance charger on but battery switch OFF. It was taken quite a while before I received the new coils (2) and I decided to wait with the repair due to various reasons until a couple of days ago.

When I put the ignition on, the f... X appear again, same symptoms as last time, I went in to my house (deeply concern) but after a while the gear indicator and all the other alarms was reset, but the mileage start from 555555 again and counter from there again... (Correct value is approx 27000 km equivalents to 16875 miles)

(The good thing that day was that I manage to sort out the multiple misfire issue and the car act like new again- but that is another story) But this failure was certainly one of the main reasons why I didn’t use the car for that long period of time.

- My main concern with the cluster is that since it happen two times within "2 seasons"; is what can I do to avoid happen the "third" time ?

- I will contact F.A.I. again; I believe it would be easier for them to do a proper check since the cluster will arrive in the same internal condition as when the failure occur, opposite to last time when it was cleaned by another "company", but that is only my assumption?

- Anyone having any idea where the humidity can come from? , car is parked in a garage, not heated, but it should not be necessary to have a heated garage to have a Ferrari..., my BMW M3 has no issues in the same garage

- Is there any single component in that cluster which can cause all those failures?

- Is there a battery inside the cluster which can be changed, keeping the mileage stored when the battery switch in the luggage compartment is off for "months?"


- Is it better to start the car “once in the while" even if I can not drive it because of snow and ice condition to prevent this from happens (reoccurring)?

- Any other recommendations?
