After having my battery disconnected and replaced I now have a large X in my Gear Display box. Also my odometer has changed from miles to kilometres.
Does anyone know what the X means or how I can change the odometer back without a costly visit to a dealer?

Also I have an annoying rattle in the front passenger side, somewhere in the suspension. Bushes have been replaced and all joints lubricated and tightened but have made no difference. Dealer can find nothing. Any Ideas?

Thanks but I've read the books cover to cover and there is no mention of an X or changing Kms to miles.

I have never seen an X in the gear display. I just reviewed the entire f1 section in the shop manual and no mention is made of it.

I have never been asked to try to change the odometer from miles to kilo or back so I have no idea if it can easily be done but if it can I suspect it will take an SD2 to do it. There are several generations of software for the Cruscotto (Dash) and they do not all have the same capabilities. The newest is not the most capable so someone may have to sift through several sets of software to even try.

The electronics in the dash are in my experience the most fragile in the car. Is there any chance the battery got connected backwards (polarity) ? Or did the battery get a fast charge at over 14-15 volts? I know the dash can be hurt with too much voltage.

On the front end noise, I have seen several of them with loose ball joints that made a rattle. Should have a look at those when the electronic troubles get sorted out.

Also it is often valuable to have the information in your profile to help you, type of car, location etc.

Thanks. The battery polarity was never mixed but it is possible that the electronics may have gotten over 14 - 15 volts cos I used a jump start pack when the old battery was low.

Thanks for the advice on the ball joints. Can you get aftermarket parts or do they have to be purchased through a dealer?

The ball joints are an integral part of the control arm. You might give T Rutland a call. I'll bet Rutland is buying them from a dealer so you should shop around. Those parts are for a new enough car that I'm sure Ferrari has a proprietary contract with the manufacturer.

You mention that the battery went down - did you "jump start" the car, the reason I ask is that this is one of the most common ways to "spike" the dash display. Basically the "X" means that the car now thinks it's a manual (although it should still drive as F1) and the configuration of the dash has been changed, also the mileage to km is down to the configuration change.

A question, does the odometer show 555555, if so the the entire unit will have to be replaced, if not then with the aid of an SD2 tester your dealer will be able to switch back the km to miles, but probably won't have the software to remove the "X". Best thing for them would be to contact FNA for advise.

Sounds like a job for.......CYBERMAN !! (If only there were such a superhero..)

seriously though, there must be some protection for the electrics in the event of reverse polarity.

I haven't studied the diagrams very closely and haven't had the problem, but there are fuses around the battery area that I "think" protect against voltage surge in the event of alternator failure/polarity swap etc.

This may help. Whenever you disconnect the battery you must reset the system. Get in car. Turn key to on position, do not start the car. Slowly press throttle to floor and allow it to return fully. Do this five times. Now start the engine. This should reset your throttle and possibly the display. LOL Robert.
