Starting my search for a 360 Spider, I was told the F1 Transmisions on the "01s and 02s" were very "neck snaping" (not smooth, jerky, ect.) and I should stay away from those years. Please tell me if this is true, and what you would recommend for me pertaining to the purchase of a 360 Spider. Thank you.

I'm no authority, but if you snoop around on F-chat you'll find that there were some refinements made in 01 or 02 to improve the F1 clutch engagement, so you may have it backwards (the '99s and '00s were probably less smooth). I have an '02 Modena and I would not describe it as jerky at all, except sometimes in first gear before the car is warmed up it can require some very steady pedal pressure to prevent some lurching. I think the refinements are worth having.

I'll second what Brian sez...my'02 is very smooth but it does need to warm up or it can lurch. I'm enjoying the F1 very much,Leo went out yesterday, close to 60' brite blu skies,a good day for a romp,,,
    best wishes on your search,

When I was shopping for my 360 about a year ago, I identified a long list of upgrades in place by the ’02 model year. One of those is a new TCU loaded with improved F1 software. I test drove earlier cars and there is definitely a difference. For this and many other reasons, I concluded an ’02 or later was definitely the better choice for me.

BEING WITH FERRARI FOR 5 YEARS NOW, I HAVE FOUND THAT IF YOU HAVE A GOOD CLUTCH AND THROWOUT BEARING AND THE PERSON WORKING ON YOUR CAR KNOWS HOW TO PROPERLY SET UP THE PARAMETERS AND PIS POINTS YOU CAN GET ALL OF THEM TO SHIFT SMOOTH. THE ONES THAT SHIFT HARD ARE THE ONES WHERE SOMETHING ISN'T RIGHT IN THE CLUTCH OR SET UP OF THE CLUTCH. YOU CAN SWAP OUT TCU'S WITH AN O3 AND UP TCU WHICH IS A SUPERIOR UPDATED UNIT.

I can atest to only 1 car so take it for what its worth (no much), but I drove an '01 F1 and, yes, up shifts under power were somewhat 'jerky'. Downshifts were very smooth however.

I have had an "01 and now an '04. Although I haven't driven the '04 much (just got it in Dec.), my early opinion is that the '04 is a LOT smoother than the "01 was....
