Hello, I have now had my 2001 F1 Transmission 360 Modena for a couple months. The car from time to time will make a clunking noise and/or grinding noise when going from 2-1st gear. I noticed this doesn't happen as often if I let the car warm up for about 10-12 minutes before driving. I checked fluids after car warms up a bit and they look good. The car does has an almost brand new clutch that was done at the beginning of the year. All the other gears shift fine for the most part. Is my transmission going bad? is this a PIS issue? The last owner reported that this started happening after he let someone else drive the car. My thought was that the person who was borrowing it was launching the car very hard. The car is going to go in for service next month but am very curious to see what everyones thoughts are on this issue.

I would immediately check the fluid ..for level and antifreeze contamination

Also have someone do a gearbox relearn ..that may help

What is your PIS ..does it happen more cold or hot

Does you car move by itself when in gear with no gas being applied

What are the circumstances for the 2-1 downshift? That is typically a hard shift on the transmission if it's for engine braking. I only make that shift when I'm almost at a stop.

I only make this shift when approaching a stop light/sign at normal driving/speeds

If overfilled it overflows. May not be leaking. It's rather common because filling it to the specified dipstick level will overfill it.

Gear oil is not what is in there .... It is ATF

Your F1 system has two systems per SE ..the F1 system itself is a ATF fluid and the gearbox has the 75w90.you mentioned

Do you have more info on the ATF that I would use? Or can point me to an existing thread I could reference on here?

Since it is a older 360 - use Castrol Dex/Merc for older Gm cars ( that's on the label)

My comments on top mentioned to check gear oil for level and contamination nit F1 fluid

Also the way to properly check F1 fluid ..is to open door , turn key and immediately measure fluid from top on disk inside reservoir..should be half s finger nail above disc

That’s not your transmission fluid. DO NOT PUT THAT OIL IN THERE! That’s your F1 system hydraulic fluid and it uses ATF fluid.

How do you check the Gear oil? is there a thread on here showing that?

In it is your owners manual

There is a little dipstick on the left side of transmission..Idle for about 2 mins , wait 5 minutes after shutting off

Remove dipstick , wipe , put back in (just resting on threads ..don't screw in) and then measure ..should be between min and max

This doesn't answer your question, but when slowing to a complete halt I usually drop it into neutral (pull both paddles towards you) to avoid doing the 2>1 shift completely. As others have said, it's quite a harsh change at the best of times. Could the clunk you're hearing be due to worn engine / gearbox mounts allowing the whole thing to bounce about ?

Possibly, but thank you for the advice shifting to N instead of 1, I will try doing that and see if there's a difference. Will also re-check owners manual for gear oil check instructions. Thank you!
