360 F1 Transmission bucking problem

Try to feather the throttle a bit to avoid that. Other than a nice smooth take off, you'll probably have that problem.

 

Are you bogging? Have you tried raising the revs before you step off the brake which engauges the clutch? Launching like this will put more stress on everything. Be Warned.

 

Don't know how long you've had your car. Make sure you're not "toe-tapping" when you apply power. Deliberate, steady pressure at start yield the best launch.

Hey, Jim! I just step smooth. The throttle-by-wire hates indecisiveness (or lazy foot).

My clutch was recently readjusted to engage at about 1,800 RPM. Takeoffs, as well as low-speed maneuvers, are much more positive with very little slip.

 

Most dealers throw a new clutch in for this problem, but it will only cure it for a short while. I've heard of clutches being replaced only 25% worn.

There are a number of factory updates from Aug 2000 that try to address this problem. (F1 software, release bearing scraper and o-ring sizes, clutch and disc....flywheel too, but that was due to faulty 3 bolt ring gear replacement campaign. Basically all the updates supercede the parts to the Stradale components, software, etc. There was also an ECU upgrade for this as well and it's by VIN no. If I remember correctly, the factory began the ECU upgrade in Aug of 2000 as well during production. Other cars beforehand need the update.

Even with all this, it is still a problem. You can try to trick it with changing values "out of spec" with the PIS in the software with the SD2, but no guarantees. Basically the whole system is very sensitive and tries to simulate the "feel" a driver has as things wear....it's just not quite as good as a good ole human being.

It should have been done by your dealer under warrantee. However, it seems quite a few owners did not get notified of this til after the warrantee was out.

Don't know where you live, but the software changes have to be done with the SD2. Fortunately my independent Ferrari shop has an SD2 and has played with this problem a bit. Ferrari of Houston is very good with this and actually taught me how to do the 'trick values" but you need to do all the hardware and software updates if they are needed and a new clutch disc will get rid of the problem....at least for a while.

People ask me all the time 6 speed vs F1......6 speed for now in my book. Hopefully the 430 does not have this problem, but I do not know if there has been any improvement.

I have a similar problem in my 2004 360 Modena F1 with only 2K miles. I searched the archives and found various complaints of a similar kind on earlier year 360s, not using the word "bucking" but hesitation, lurching, etc.

My problem sounds like yours, it occurs in 1st/2nd gear and seems to sort itself out in higher gears. It's ackward, makes me wonder what the hell is going on?

Aside from modifications/upgrades that may be in the later 360s vs. earlier models, my take is the following;

1) the problem tapers off as the car warms up, in keeping with suggestions to relax on the throttle until the oil fully heats up -- and that takes 5-10 minutes
2) steady foot on gas peddle, no letting off, at smoothest shift point, which in my case is 4000rpms, is critical not to aggravate the problem and contributes to smoother shifts
3) as suggested by another 360 owner, he got his clutch adjusted in view of the low gear change lurching problem, resulting in far smoother low end shifts AND ability to shift smoothly at around 1800 rpms. I plan to ask for an adjustment at my first regular servicing.

I had a 355 F1 which, in general, is not as smooth as the 360 F1 but I never had the jerky low end problem we're talking about.

maybe i am dumb but does't this sound like simply a slipping clutch due to wear? May be glazed

 

Check the Clutch.

 

I had this problem in a BMW M3 with the SMG gearbox until the dealer did the software update.....it's the same system as Ferrari incidentally.....and the programming changes made a huge difference. Get that done first by an experienced dealer and I'll bet you are a much happier driver afterwards.
