Recently acquired my first Ferrari a 2002 360 F1 and when I attempted to start it today, it does not even try to turn over, simply will not start. Battery at 14V on a trickle charger. All the warning lights flash on as usual and only the check engine light stays on, otherwise it displays "check ok." It displays that it is in 1st gear rather than neutral and will not shift into neutral or any other gear. The F1 light is not on and it goes through its normal 6 sec cycle when I open the door. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Engine lid closed? You hit the immobilizer button on the fob?

Push hard on the brake and pull the paddle forward into neutral it won’t start if it thinks it in 1st gear

Ok, do this prior to attempting to start the car?

If you are already in neutral, you don't need to push the brake pedal (but it doesn't hurt). You only need to push on the pedal if you are in first gear.

If you have to push hard on your brake pedal to get the car to change gear, it's out of adjustment (or broken). Check the plunger on brake pedal switch (in front of the brake pedal) to see if it is clear of the brake pedal arm when you push the pedal to the floor.

There are different types of switches with different adjustment methods.

Try exercising/tapping the switch to see if anything changes.

Yes put the key in and turn it not all the way. When the dash light up push hard on the brake and pull both paddles towards you. That should put it into neutral. Then just start the car as per normal

Thank you both, it’s locked up for the night but will try doing that asap. Appreciate the tips! I think the owner of the garage where I keep it moved it the other day but did not put it back in neutral when he killed the ignition.

I have an F1 and always turn the car off when in 1st gear. I don't apply the parking brake in my garage, but always apply everywhere else. When starting back up, I shift into Neutral before turning the ignition.

Try what was suggested by disarming with the fob, turning the key partially to turn on the system and waiting for the 'OK', then press the brake, then pull both paddles back to shift into Neutral before starting. Hopefully it is something simple.

Plus no one trusts the parking brake on a 360 anyway !!

I had this very problem when I first bought my 360 a couple of years ago - it was a sticky brake light switch on the brake pedal.

Thanks everyone, that worked like a charm - turn key halfway, depress brake firmly, pull paddles into neutral, then start. Really appreciate it!

No probs we’ve all been there. The other one is sometimes when the car is hot it doesn’t go into reverse, so leave it in first and pull the reverse lever and it will work all work fine. I had to rescue someone at Le Mans with that trick one year !

One other comment for this thread. All that needs to be done is cause the brake lights to come on. A light press on it will work just as well as stomping it to the floor. There's only a sensor for brake activated, not by how much.

It's a good idea to check your brake lights now and then. When in the garage, just look in the rear view and press lightly on the brake pedal. They should come on with the first 1/2" of travel or less. If they don't, and you have to stomp on it for the light to come on, or they don't come on at all, there's an issue with that silly and breakable switch. It's a cheap part that can be replaced with no tools in about 5 minutes or less.

How many have had to change that switch? I did. I have a manual and it caused all sorts of weird faults and errors totally unrelated to the brakes. My brake sensor was stuck on with one of the switches (there are two switches in a gated).

I've had many cars over my lifetime and I've never had to replace a brake switch before. Funny how that is on the 360.

As mentioned, you don't need to press on the brake firmly (unless you have brake pedal travel issues or brake switch issues). Maybe take a photo of your switch with the brake pedal pushed normally (not through the floor). The photo will tell us which type of switch you have and how to adjust it.

Maybe take a photo with the engine running to see if there is any difference.

I had this very problem too - after getting it back from a few weeks away at the garage who looks after it. In my case it was due to a low battery as it hadn't been on a trickle charger which it is at home. The following day after a night on charge, it rectified itself
