So I just celebrated my first anniversary of Ferrari ownership with my 2000 360 Modena. I accomplished my first goal, to spend no money on the car in the first year. I did put new tired on the car a month ago by choice. I am driving the car tomorrow from Boise to Portland for belt service at The Jag Shop. I'll fly back home tomorrow and go back in a week to pick it up. I'll let everyone know how it all goes.

    Good luck!!!

The independent shop did mine (2001 360 Coupe) in one day (shop in Gaithersburg, MD).

Have then check the belt tensioners... Go with Hill Engineering replacements. They are better than the Ferrari ones. Do the forum search.

Actually you did spend money on the car...it's called depreciation.

For us looking to take the plunge, would you mind describing:

    a) Did you do a PPI or anything else prior to purchase? Or did you go in knowing you were going to do some maintenance?

    b) What all did you have to do within 6 months to cost you $24k....engine rebuild?

If not, would you mind PMing me the info for my own edification?

Depreciation? On a nearly fourteen year old Ferrari? I would say depreciation is the last thing the OP has to worry about.

Haha, I knew that was going to come up and bite me... Honestly, I've forgotten some of the stuff I've had done.

I did have a PPI before the purchase, but it wasn't perfect, so I had to pay for some of that stuff. The PPI was by a Ferrari dealership, and the recommendation was to buy the car if I could negotiate the right price, and I did both.

Not an engine rebuild, but a lot of other stuff. Probably almost 50% of the money I spent could be considered "optional."
Optional items: bought new tires, old ones could have worked for a season or two. Added a challenge grille to the rear. Had a full interior / exterior cosmetic reconditioning done by Esoteric Auto Detail. Had all 4 wheels totally refurbished (OEM starfish 5-spokes). Had a new audio system upgrade built and installed. I'm very happy with all of these "optional" purchases.

Other MAJOR items: Replace intake manifold gaskets, replace brakes, replace OEM headers and cats with new aftermarket pieces, fix broken passenger door handle / lock. I haven't had the need to do either belts or clutch, since my car had both of those done prior to my purchase.

I don't wanna hijack this thread. I'm sure there are things I'm missing in my list - the car and records are not with me at the moment.

Ah yes, that magical ultra rare $10k bill that every one here talks about.

I must be lucky I have had 2 of them in 18 months. Granted some of the bills were self-inflicted, Capistro twin-sound and Challenge grill, the rest was all for the car like belts done last week with less then 2 years on them due to a major cam seal leak. Next year is clutch so that wont be cheap either...then the car will be cheap for a few years I hope.

I did know my front suspension was shot when I bought the car, so I knew I was going to spend on that first thing, the rest were things like cleaning the plenum after a major overfill by the ex-owner's shop. Fixing a coolant leak and caused me to nearly overheat (caught it before going into red) less than 15 minutes after purchasing the car, fixing electrical issues due to really stoopid wiring of aftermarket amp and radio. I also knew the exhaust and motor mounts had issues before purchasing. Just lots of little things, but in a Ferrari it adds up QUICK. Also remember its my daily driver so it gets used most then most cars here, it will always cost me more to maintain it and i budget for that (for as long as my wife lets me).

No problem, just wanted to get an idea and it's great that you further broke it down between optional and major items....some things can be done over a few years, but when you want it done and done now, I can see the price adding up!

That's my problem. I'm not a patient man. I had planned to do some things spread out over time, but once you get going down a path and you can see and appreciate the results, it's hard to stop going through your list.

My list isn't totally done yet, but the rest of the stuff is REALLY REALLY minor and doesn't register on my radar much. So, I have a higher tolerance for waiting on those things.

I purchased the car from another F-chatter. I had a PPI done in Florida by Forza Motors (thanks Frank) nothing major came up. I knew the car would need belts in a year and probably tires (not an issue of wear but age). I did have the dreaded CEL come up once or twice with the P0442 code (gas cap). I would re-emphasize what was told to me. Buy the best car you can get and get a PPI.
Oh by the way, the drive was perfect. No issues. Dropped the car off with Craig at The Jag Shop and am now at the airport having a beer waiting for my flight back to Boise. I am envious of you guys with a local dealer/Indy to do your service. But how many of you can say you drove your Ferrari 400miles today?

    Hi,

I am looking to buy a 355 or 360 and considering the 360 is an engine IN for the cam belts are they not cheaper to do than a 355 which is an engine OUT job?

I’ve been reading the threads on both cars and just curious in service costs between the two. The 360 is not that much more expensive to buy than a 355 here in the UK and if the service costs for the 355 are extortionate then maybe its a false economy and the 360 is a better choice?

What do you guys think? Anyone had both?

    Thanks.
