Hypothetical—. If one were to procure linked used 360 longblock… and rebuild it as a spare.., Do the usual tricks work on the venerable 360 for more hp/tq::::

    milled heads
Extrude hone intake tunnels in the towers
    Any cam upgrade options?
    Are challenge cams different?
Anyone offer a stroker crank and rods?

    many benefit to porting heads???

I would belive there is allways good improvement in the head area with a quality port and polish. Cams could move the power band more higher along with new higher compression pistons i could easily see in the 500 hp range.

What is a long block? Is there also a short block? How would one know which one they have?

Short block is usually just the block (crankcase) itself with rotating assembly.

Long block is short block + heads

This really depends. On Honda S2000 for instance it is really hard to do better than factory as they build it Mae max already. It might be the case for Ferrari as they’re great engine manufacturer. If you do port th head make sure to compare before and after with a flow machine. In the old days, we ported each cylinder differently to learn which port is the best. We wasted 2 Honda S2000 heads before learning it’s pretty much impossible.

Here is what Ferrari did for the Superamerica to increase hp of the 575M from 515 to 540. Valve job with wider cuts necessitating shorter valves, deck shaved to increase compression, intake manifold ported, cams advanced 6 degrees. Here are the actual factory hot rod changes to the F133G engine from the F133E.

Did the 360 challenge race cars have the same engine as say a 360 modena? ???

There honestly is not much room for improvement. These engines are pretty much the best they can be as they are.

Obviously if money is no object..cams, turbos/superchargers, set of hollely 750 double pumpers..zoom zoom fast!!

I know TREV will add the CS or F430 MAS and intake tubes.... then tune for this to add more RPM.... and then the big element it seems is weight redux.

what is stock compression ratio? 10:1?

I pushed out a head gasket a few years ago at 70K miles. Since there was a bit of corrosion on the surface of the heads, we had no choice but to shave 11 mils off of the heads. The car now has CRAZY horsepower. I have surpassed 106K miles with zero issues. And this was with no other mods whatsoever.

The N-GT had 540hp so there is plenty of room for improvement. But I would wager that one of those would not be too street friendly. Would need 5000 revs to get going. As you push the power up in the revs you sacrifice low/midrange driveability.

I wonder how much bore you could get out of the 3.6.
If this motor could could be a 4.0 but still have the bore vs stroke ratio too keep the rpms that would be nice.

You can improve the car quite a bit with headers, hi flo cats, exhaust, CS Max’s and CS tune. I can tell a big difference in overall performance and how fast the car revs out. Even with 20inch novitecs, it allows me to hang with most of the high hp cars in the canyon.
