I have problems getting into 1st and 2nd gear. Actually can't engage at all. It doesn't happen everytime I begin driving nor does it happen continually until the engine warms. I did read that the F1 had a clutch engagement problem in these gears when cold. My car has 8600 mi. with the clutch replaced at 5000mi. Could this mean the 1st and 2nd gear synchronizers need replacing? The warranty stops next month, so I need to act soon. Any ideas? Steven

Second gear engagement when cold always seems to be a problem with the mid engine cars, still continues on the 430, but your problem is obviously beyond that. I would have the gearbox linkage checked and adjusted, as well as checking clutch adjustment. If that doesn't do it, it sounds like synchros...but with that few miles, I would hope one of the adjustments would put you right.

Keep in mind that Ferrari was replacing complete transmissions under warrenty in the early run cars 1999, 2000 had this issue mainly. I sent 3 back to the dealer for this very issue..each time, they replaced the gearbox.

If syncros are going, the tranny will grind at first going into gear. When they are really gone, you can still shift by double clutching and rev matching up or down. When done right, any tranny will shift smooth as silk even with shot syncros. If it won't go in at all, it's something else.

Adjust the cables and get rid of the trash oil Ferrari put in it.

Ferrari uses Shell products for one reason and one reason only, they get paid huge money for it.

The motor oil foams and the gear oil doesn't shift.

I have the same problem a while ago with one of my 360 (43K miles), the thing is I got "lucky" because my gears won't engage in "5th & 6th" gear.. It appears there's some cable tangling (according to FoBH) and it was fixed under warranty..

    good luck!

I'm betting Brian recommends Mobil 1...Porsche uses it for factory fill, and it is highly thought of.

    Hey hutch,

I was told to leave the car out of gear and clutch out at idle and only engage when ready to move.. This is why my 430 is F1..lol..

    Cheers Michael..

Well some guys are close when they tell you its the linkage. Actually this car does not have a linkage, it had cables but it is their adjustment that is crucial. A slight incorrect adjustment will cause this issue.

Well, i just drove my '03 360 today since getting it back from having a new clutch and tubi exhaust installed. Tubi sounds awesome. However, the problem of occasionally not able to get into 1st or 2nd gear or both is still present. It doesn't happen everytime, perhaps once every 30 times pass thru those gears. It may be more often at higher RPM's, although it is difficult to say so for sure at this time. Anyway, I guess it needs cable/hydraulic adjustments?

Nope, they most likely put no oil in, or topped it off with Shell.
