When my engine is cold a ticking sound occurs for about 30 seconds . Is this normal?
Do you mean the ticking sound lasts for 30 seconds after you start up? Or perhaps you are referring to a ticking sound as it cools down?
I have no ticking at cold start up,but lots at cool down... which is normal according to the dealer.Exhaust,metal shields etc going through expansion and contraction.Can you better describe the "ticking" that you hear.
Lifters. A subject that has consumed a great many hours of ours over the last few months. We have now identified several different failure modes and have tooled up to rebuild them in house with upgraded parts as they are NLA from Ferrari.
Same crap design. And you all love to play chemist/engineer with your oils on top of it. Should start the thread on 430 failures being investigated as I type......
Same part on the 360 as the 355 as Brian stated. In fact it was failures of a 360 set of lifters that were my first experience to the problem. This is one of the reasons a small group of Pro's in this industry keep in constant contact discussing new findings. We may not have the answers but identifying a problem is the first step..... in time solutions follow. Snow belt / part year stored cars have different issues that year around use cars and when they are sold out of their area..... Few realize how much information is discussed and shared in this small group so we can all stay on top of issues not common to our area. I had heard about lifters failures two years before I experienced and had to deal with one. With my ongoing research into this problem I can now understand many variables I identified years earlier and it suggests this problem has been around much longer than I first thought. Pay close attention to what Brian speaks of, that is a voice of experience.
Thanks for the input - my mechanic said not to worry he stated That when you leave the car the oil settles in the sump and it may make some noise initially but as long as it stops and does not recur when the car is warmed up and restarted it is ok
They all start out as a 'tick'. Ignore at your peril. I'm just about to finish an expensive estimate on a car that had a tick.....
Ferrari lifters tend to tick until they are full of oil and pump up to close the gap between valve and cam. On 612s and 599s, it annoys owners enough to where Ferrari started adding an additive to quiet those lifters. It is your mechanic that has his ears on your engine, none of us do and we cant hear it from a few thousand miles away. ""They all start out as a 'tick'. Ignore at your peril."" is very sound advise. When an engine makes noises that are not common to the model.... I always find it grounds for concern but I am not standing there to hear it, your tech is.
