360 Oil Change - Do it right...

    A good customer of Ricambi America sent us some insightful pictures from his 360 oil change. While most people just drain the old gunk, spin on a new filter then pour in some more oil, this particular DIY customer leaves no stone unturned. He thoughtfully pulled out the mesh filter assembly to inspect, clean, and replace. What he found, was quite interesting:

    While I'm not 100% certain from simply looking at the pictures, it appears the mesh filter just rubbed against a casting nipple in the box for the past 5 years. With the screen significantly compromised, it was indeed time for a new one.

    The replacement oil suction filter 177130, is available here: http://www.ricambiamerica.com/product_info.php?products_id=207293 I'm not suggesting that everyone buy a new mesh filter whenever they do an oil change -- but I would strongly advise folks pull the filter, inspect it, and probably replace o-rings 177549 and 177550 while they're in there.

    I have never seen a casting problem do that. If it did it will happen again if repairs to the casting are not made.

    That piece is motionless anything sticking into the bore would cause different damage sliding it into and out of place. I suspect it is a result of human interaction.

    Did the oil change as per many posts. Getting a leak at the oil suction filter (see above posts), as I took it out to clean the filter screen. Are there any tricks to getting this leak free, other than changing the O rings (which I didn't) (yea, yea..I should have known better)

    My guess is what you suspect, the o-rings have hardened.. You can buy just the o-rings from Ricambi..

    on the orings with the 2 part #rs that were provided how many of each are needed?
    also what do you guys use to clean the filter?

    On Daniels website 1 of each 1 O.R. GASKET 177550 & 177549 (pricey little o-rings)..

    Use a degreaser & gently with air so you do not distort/damage the fine mesh..

    Or a couple of sprays of brake cleaner or carb cleaner probably work by itself. DO NOT scrub hard or any on that mesh if you can help it... she is delicate & pricey!!

    Anybody have any tips on how to pull this filter out. I have never been able to get it out. There is no easy way to grasp or twist the filter out with the studs in place.

    she will wiggle out. If I remember right you can tap a small corner of it from the backside corner I think.. I am going by memory but I think thats how you can get it started, once started she will slide out.

    Use a small flat bladed putty knife and very carefully work both bolt hole areas.

    Don't force it and it will start and then it can be pulled out.

    Have the oil drain pain beneath it!

    FWIW my mesh filter looked exactly like that last year when we did my annual oil/filter change. It had that little worn out spot near the bottom. We replaced it.
