Considering the above - probably a CS. My work commute is only 2 miles so I hate the idea of firing one up for 2 mile stints at a time but that's the way my commute is and would have time to really enjoy her at weekends. Any thoughts on this though - are short stints really bad news over a long period for this specific engine? I currently have a BMW Z4M (M3 engine) - I would have presumed the 360 engine is just as "battleproof" but just needs more regular attention?
May I suggest you buy a CS for weekend and a compact car for 2 miles commute??? 2 miles isn't enough to put some juice back into the battery. Today's car requires a lot of computer power and weak battery is bad news. Battery tender would solve this problem though. But a short run is tough for any car as it hasn't even warmed through yet. Anyway, my daily commute is 1.5 miles each way...and I use a small scooter and old motorcycle. No point wasting energy for short commute which give very little joy. I might as well save the world by using 50cc 4-stroke to run around... I then can destroy the earth by driving my 575 during weekend.
After owning a CS for two years I dont like to get in it unless I can drive at least 30mnts on a long stretch or windy road. Car needs to warm up, and race around before she really wakes up. Thats just how these cars are built going back to the 308 and beyond. You'll get tired of it or find yourself procrastinating on the way to work.
I DD a TR, 308, 348 and an F40. Get the CS! The car will be fine, and you will have a big smile on your face.
Two things. #1-Don't think you can not use the CS as a daily driver-I did for three years and it was great. As long as you give the engine some warm up time before you leave you are good to go-the engine is like a truck engine. #2-I have a Z4 M Coupe-no comparison on the maintenance issue. The Z4 M is really inexpensive to maintain and is probably one of the most under rated sports cars around. It is fast, comfortable and handles. I found the sport mode only good for highway driving otherwise the car is too edgy. There is an enormous difference between an M and a CS. The CS is a much bigger car and compared to the M car-it's almost like driving a GT (not that it is). Ideally-get the CS and keep the M for the daily driving.
I drive my 360 to work a couple days a week but I let it warm up for 3-5 minutes before I drive away and 2 miles down the road the oil temp is nowhere near ideal operating temperature. Until the oil warms up, I keep the revs below 4000. I guess the answer to your question is that yes you could drive it daily on a 2 mile commute but it might not be ideal for the engine on a daily basis. Perhaps a compromise would be to drive it a couple times a week as I do and keep a daily driver for most commute days or days where the weather is inclimate.
It takes an insane amount of time to get the oil temp up, as the (dry) sump holds like 12 quarts. So if you did a lot of 2 mile trips spaced apart by an 8 hr. work day you'd likely accumulate lots of carbon fouling and never get the oil really hot enough to boil off condensed water and impurities. Get a hybrid (or most any other car) for the commute and figure it as a sort of "carbon offset" for the pleasure drives in the Ferrari on weekends and other opportunities for trips much longer than 2 miles.
