I am planning to purchase a preowned (2001 to 2004 model year) Ferrari 360 F1 Spider here in the Los Angeles area (Symbolic motors or FOC) . I have been monitoring the site for quite some time and finally have a few questions. Currently I have a 2002 Viper Rt/10 and it's been very reliable. Dealer service is miserable, but the independant shops (DC Performance) here is great.

1 - How reliable is a 360? Can I expect problems with the F1 tranny? If so which problems are common to the 360 ??? What problems are common to each model year??

2 - How is dealer service after the sale? Does the dealer bend over backwards to help you? Are replacement parts available in a timely manner?

3 - Reading the board,Ferrari seems to deny some warranty claims? Have you guys been happy with their warranty service?

4 - Since the Ferrari has only a 2 year warranty, what can be done (extended service contract) to protect my investment from cosly repairs after the warranty period??

5 - Aside from FOC (Ferrari of Orange Country) any others dealers you recommned? What has been your experience with dealers in the LA area??

6 - Any words of advise before I purchase my vehicle? Anything in particular to be aware of??

If you don't feel like replying to this board, please e-mail me directly below.

    Thanks,
    Uzy

This is anecdotal, and not empiracal, because the sample size is one.

That said, I owned a '99 360 and put 13,000 miles on it, drove it hard, did canyon runs, tracked it multiple times, and NEVER had a single problem with it.

That said, I did take care of it, e.g. letting the water terperature go up before even putting around, and letting the oild temp go up before ever pushing the car above like 3k rpm.

I babied it where it should be babied, and drove it to make Enzo proud at the same time -- the result, no problems.

I sold the 360 as a downpayment on a recently delivered 360 CS, and have put 900 miles on it. No issues with that car either, and it seems great.

My only other experience with a 'high milage' Ferrari was an F40 I rented in Germany which had 25,000+ km on it and while the alignment was whacked, otherwise the car ran fantastically, the engine was great, the interior had held up, etc.

My verdict: Ferrari makes a reliable sports car you can drive hard, if you don't abuse it.

I think the key is you have to use it regularly -- non-use is abusive. If you avoid the garage queens, you'll have far fewer problems.

13'000 miles on a 360 ? 900 miles on a CS ? You really have high expectations when it comes to reliability.

I have always found Ferrari of Orange county reliable, fair and trustworthy. They have never broke a promise to me and their service department is outstanding.

They serviced my 2001 Spider and their San Diego Service dept. services my 2004 Spider. They stand by their warranty work as does Ferrari.

BTW, I thought the warranty was three years or 30,000 miles.

The only problem I have had is the top mechanism requires frequent adjustment.

Actually, the warranty is 3 years/unlimited mileage.

Viperman: If (and only if) you buy a previously owned Ferrari from an authorized dealer (Symbolic would not qualify), you can obtain a FACTORY extended warranty. I had no major problems with my 1999 for the 3+ years of ownership, but I'd want to have a warranty in effect for my ownership term. Just my 2 cents.

BTW, the service department at the AutoGallery is outstanding should its location prove convenient for you.
