I am planning to purchase a preowned (2001 to 2004 model year) Ferrari 360 F1 Spider here in the Los Angeles area (Symbolic motors or FOC) . I have been monitoring the site for quite some time and finally have a few questions. Currently I have a 2002 Viper Rt/10 and it's been very reliable. Dealer service is miserable, but the independant shops (DC Performance) here is great.

1 - How reliable is a 360? Can I expect problems with the F1 tranny? If so which problems are common to the 360 ??? What problems are common to each model year??

2 - How is dealer service after the sale? Does the dealer bend over backwards to help you? Are replacement parts available in a timely manner?

3 - Reading the board,Ferrari seems to deny some warranty claims? Have you guys been happy with their warranty service?

4 - Since the Ferrari has only a 2 year warranty, what can be done (extended service contract) to protect my investment from cosly repairs after the warranty period??

5 - Aside from FOC (Ferrari of Orange Country) any others dealers you recommned? What has been your experience with dealers in the LA area??

6 - Any words of advise before I purchase my vehicle? Anything in particular to be aware of??

If you don't feel like replying to this board, please e-mail me directly below.

    Thanks,
    Uzy

No problems at all with my 13 month old 360 with 3200 miles. However, I have the 6 speed. Purchase my F-Cars from Ferrari San Francisco. Always great support from this store for F-Cars out of warranty as well as those still in. Have found Ferrari Bev Hills to offer reliable and timely service too. Only warranty claims I have had are on my 2002 daily driver Maserati GT Spider. One was cheerfully handled by Ferrari SF involving a bad seal on the hydraulic clutch reservoir. The other also cheerfully handled by Ferrari Bev Hills to replace the ash tray when the cheapo plastic Maserati badge broke into pieces. For my out of warranty 355 Spider, Ferrari San Francisco went out of its way to resolve a failed hydraulic pump for the top. Replacement cost of the pump was $6250. Rather than replace it, removed it and then researched and located outside vendor to rebuild it. Final cost was in $500 range. That's service.

Have also found FX Performance in West LA to be reliable for non warranty and or aftermarket items for both the F-Cars and the Maserati.

Service for these cars has never been the issue that it is sometimes rumored to be. Perhaps I have been lucky, but the luck remains uninterupted.

I have had my '01 360 F1 in for some minor warranty things at FoOC and was treated very well. Their service department is first class and the service manager and department, are very easy to deal with. The sales people on the other hand are rather alloof and apparently don't need any new F-customers.......

My 360 is now out of warranty so the fun begins. It has been a good car so I think things will be OK. If I was more concerned I would get an extended warranty from exoticwarranty.com.(10% off for F-chat members) I think that I will just deal with things as they come up so I'll keep my fingers crossed.

The ideal situation with these newer cars is to buy one that includes as long a warranty as possible(depending on your budget) so that the only concern is changing fluids etc. The dealer will take care of everything else, except a new clutch if it wears out. I would not buy a car without a warranty thrown in just in case it's a POS.

My experience with Ferrari has been first rate. This includes some travel assistance with FNA and FSpa. It's like anything you need to figure out what you're dealing with(an exotic, luxury item) and then treat your support people(service guys) with respect so that they in turn treat you with the same.

    Good luck with your purchase.
