I recently completely a long trip about 1000 miles and when I returned I noticed gasoline smell from the engine bay... Visually there was no sign... (my car is 2002 and has 50000 KM)

So today I took my car to my mechanic and we removed the engine panels.
The plastic white cross top of the passenger side fuel pump was soaked with gasoline !!!
My mechanic explained to me that it is time to replace the fuel pump, because every time I switch the engine off fuel returns to the pump and because there must be a hair line crack on the plastic , it leaks... Fixing it with some sort of glue is not going to work because gasoline dissolves everything and it is under pressure...

So I went to order both pumps (they are 15 yr old pumps, so time to replace both) and they told me that there is 10-15 days delay...

Question (I know the answer but still) :
Do you think it is ok to drive the car for small distances about 40-50 miles (1 hour drive) over the weekend ? The weather here is about 10-20 Celcius (55-65 Fahrenheit)...
The weather will be getting bad soon and I don't want to miss these two upcoming weekends...

Absolutely not!! Definitely get it fixed before driving it again. You don’t want a fuel leak to end in a car fire.

I was investigating this a couple of months ago and advised by the forum not to drive, in case fuel somehow leaks down to the engine/something hot and turns the car into a bonfire. A mechanic said the fuel pumps are fairly well enclosed so that shouldn't be able to happen. But, once it's in your mind, it might be a distraction. No clear answer unfortunately. (BTW, it was my rollover valves that needed replacing and apparently that is also a fire risk, but I had driven probably 1,000km+ before realising.)

45 PSI pressure on a hairline crack is a CAR-B-QUE just waiting to happen.

Mine did the same thing. PLEASE DON'T DRIVE IT!

The concern is where is the hairline crack? If it's at the neck where the fuel line attaches then you're only a short time away from a high pressure fuel spray hitting hot Cats and the nice engine fire images you see on the car websites "Another Ferrari decides to self immolate".

Depends on the size of the leak. A small leak might drip down but a larger one.. I wouldn't trust the metal barrier in front of the fuel tank to stop it. And then when it drips down it will collect on the under tray.

    DO NOT drive it.

Engine bay heat and fuel leak dont get along very well.

I would not risk it if I were you.

I checked the weather over the weekend and next week it seems to be rain !!!
Since I avoid taking my car out in the rain, it will be fine !!
And even if I need to take it out, the moisture of the rain should make it more difficult to start an engine fire !!

I realize one this with my Ferrari 360 Modena which I've owned for almost 15 years now :

The first 10 years are fine, only service !!
After 10 years you pay half the car in parts !!
And once it reaches 15 years you pay a full car in parts !!
    That's.... Ferrari !!! LOL

Just changed both of my pumps. The left side was leaking and the right for piece of mind. Replaced both with 430 pumps. Have been told the design was updated

Originals have white plastic tops. Updated ones are a yellowish colour on the plastic top. Time will tell if these are less prone to cracking.

Interesting... I replaced both pumps on my 360 Spider two years ago and the new pumps have yellowish plastic top as well as a newly designed float. Sound like Ferrari updated the pumps for 360s and 430s with new plastics only.

I'm waiting on bothe mine for the 360spider from Italy same 12 days max to Australia,we were lucky not had the car long smelling bit fuel thought this must be Ferraris but no LH pump wet and that engine bay got red hot on a cool day ,remember this. Petrol has an auto ignition point of 280 degrees Celsius and if you get stuck in traffic, well .tick tock( oh and the pumps for 360 and 360 spider are different fit so make shure to check that part number if that wasn't already common knowledge ); and don't forget to order the o ring gasket for each side:)

Yep, I did the R/H, previous owner must have done the L/H. The pumps don't seem to fail just the plastic top for the outlet, pressure regulator and return.
    Fingers crossed for better plastic.

So what's the correct answer? Does the 430s fit in the 360s?

i have my fuel oozing out from a line into a RUNNING TEMPERATURE stock CS exhaust manifold.
it didn't flame althought it scare the **** out of me.
But my CS is in fairly good shape , meaning the header can be cooler than those beaten up ones.

You should go buy a lottery ticket after that !! I think you must be the luckiest guy around !!

After all the posts here I was reluctant to take my Ferrari out with the fuel leak, since I don't want to see it in flames !!
So it was Porsche 993 day today !! I really enjoyed my drive !!

Those pumps should have been replaced already. They were upgraded at some point to a new style of pump. You can tell the difference just by looking: The original pumps are white, while the new ones are beige. If you have white pumps, get them replaced. And always replace fuel pumps in pairs, not one at a time.

Absolutely do not drive the car until the pumps have been replaced.

True, for the 360 it is a little confusing...
    I ordered 239813 & 239814
Not sure what 239815 is ??

I also noticed that 360 spider has different parts for fuel pumps... weird...
