I'm considering having an aftermarket navigation system in my 360 Modena. Can anyone tell me a) what source does the speedometer use for speed sensing, and b) where does the wire carrying this signal run?

    TIA,

The dealer selling the Navigational unit, if you choose to let them install it, has all of this information or can get it when they make the installation.

I had an Alpine system installed in my Testarossa and it worked like a charm.

I am about to have one installed in my 360. I spoke to the dealer, who is going to do the install, about my concerns with correct connections and they said that it is no problem.

The dashboard display is an average of the front two wheels calculated by the ABS ECU.

I wouldn't try to tap in to the cars wiring, recipe for disaster. Most GPS can do their own speed can't they??

the speed signal is communicated from the ABS ECU through the CAN bus lines to the other ECUs - not a good way to get at it

however the signal is also available through a connector under the ECU cover behind the passenger seat - the connector carries Speed, RPM and switched power – it is unused in the road cars but connected in the Challenge car to the microDAS (data logging system)

I have used it in my 360 CS with the DL1 data logger

Yes, as long as the GPS units have good satellite input they use that information for speed & location display. In addition, many units tap into the vehicle's speed/distance signals for "backup," to continue approximating location when satellite reception is temporarily lost. At least that's what I've been told...

Much simpler! The signal you want is present in one of the wires going to your factory radio (it's for GAL functionality, letting the sound of the radio increase with your speed).
I installed a Becker Traffic Pro High Speed in my 360 and did it like that with no issue. What I am having issue with however is to find the reverse signal. If anyone knows where i can find that, I'd much obliged if someone could tell me. Back to your nav thing, the factory antenna position is under the front bumper (plastic) so that you can't see anything. It takes a few hours
