Hello all, can the side flap motor be reconnected after disconnecting the cables to perform a manual closing. I had to use the emergency close procedure from the owners manual. I found that the front main top seal cylinder (for the locking latches at the windshield) was leaking. I got a new cylinder from Top Hydraulics and I used line couplers from Cabriolet Hydraulics. Now I want to reverse the process but keep seeing something about "timing" getting knocked out when people have had the clips fail and the cable to the flap popped out. Is there any way to figure out the timing myself, I'm a mechanic at a high end dealer/storage garage and cant find much on it online, and its no mentioned in the WSM. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, So much useful information on FC.

I’m not sure exactly how the “timing” works, but it’s a real concern so you’re doing the right thing by asking.

I only did the emergency close procedure once. It was due to the cables and elastics being worn and not wanting to pull the top back up and closed. So I did the manual operation and got it closed.

Next morning, when I was going to do some inspection and testing, I went to open the top, and because the cables weren’t timed correctly, it pulled the flaps down for longer than it could and snapped the pieces off that attach to the flaps. That lead me to buying the new improved aluminum flaps.

So maybe the right thing to do is from the top closed, cycle it open to the point where the flaps would start coming down. But THEN STOP. Then remove the flaps. That way, you won’t make the same mistake I and others have learned about the hard way.

In theory, you could then continue the cycle until the metal arms are all the way down, detach, adjust, and reattach the cables now that you know the proper stopping point, and continue the cycle. You won’t get that final “beep beep beep” without the flaps though as they press the last sensors in the sequence when they get to the top. THEN, you could run the cycle again to open the top, and once the cover in the back is all the way up, prop it up, turn off the power, reinstall the flaps, remove the prop, and begin closing cycle again.

Anyway, all that said, this is just my theory having learned the hard way. But like you said, I haven’t seen anything documented on how to properly reset it after the emergency procedure. But I suspect it’s not far off from what I described, because remember, the workshop manually is meant for Ferrari techs. And their answer to top fixes is always “replace everything.” That’s why I think they probably just remove the flaps to avoid the problem.

Thank you, yeah the passenger side flap got nicked pretty good during the repair, ugh. I'll sort that now.
