I recently smelled fuel after a drive. Thought it was the rollovers(which would have sucked as my car does not have access for those). I parked it and have been too busy with a move to check into the pumps. FINALLY had a few mins yesterday to look at the pumps and alas my LH side sits in a pool of fuel. I have another LH fuel pump to use, and found the video on YT with the guy changing his RH side fuel pump.

My question is this...what other info do I need in order to change out the LH side myself. I know it has the float on there as well so things may be a bit different. ALSO....where can I get a new gasket from? The other fuel pump I have to replace with does not have the gasket and I would rather not reuse the one I have if I don't have to. Anything else I need to be aware of as I do this myself...I am not a mechanic by any stretch of the imagination, but it looks like this would be a relatively easy place to start.

That float on the left side makes it a pain to do. I did mine and the CEL and gas smell are gone but the float is stuck at 3/4 of a tank, so I have to go back in. The float has to go between two baffles and it is a very tight fit. It is a simple job to unscrew the tank ring (bought the ring wrench at NAPA for 30 bucks) and disconnect the line and wiring but I am not looking forward to it.

You can buy the tool at auto stores. I got mine from Amazon for $20. The tool is ideal but you can also use a strap wrench. New gasket is a good idea. Ricambi has them. Part#181681 about $22.

    Good Luck

Stop the top halfway down (or up) and shut off the engine. The hydraulic system may slowly bleed out so use a piece of wood or a cardboard box to prop up the retracting cover to prevent scratches.

I fabricated my own lock ring tool... a welder, grinder, scrap steel, and an orphaned 3/8-inch drive socket.

Note the orientation of the fuel port on the pump hat relative to the float arm and check for the same on the new pump before installation.

The "gasket" on my 01 Spider is an o-ring and can be reused. Lube it with petroleum jelly so it doesn't tear. Also lube the lock ring threads before installation.

    Otherwise, it's a simple R & R.
