i was at gingerman race track on friday with my 360 spider and also a formula mazda. I've driven both cars on the track many many times and was able to get clean lap times. i though it might be interesting to see how the times compared with each other with the same driver with the same conditions. for those that are not familiar with the mazda it's about a $25k car that that has a 185 bhp RX7 engine, single seat formula style car with goodyear racing slicks.

my best lap time (street tires...p-zero) with the 360 was 1 min 39 sec. does anyone want to guess the mazda's lap time? I'll post the results in an hour or so.

    drum roll..............1 min 26 sec.

BTW the only other street car that beat my 360 was a porsche gt3, beat me by one second........fart.

it's amazing that a $25k car can absolutely smoke my Ferrari. of course it's dumb to compare the two, but people just don't realize how much faster race cars are than even high end sports cars.

I swear I didn't look first. Took a couple minutes to look at the June SCCA FM results. :D The winning time was 1:26.5.

I thought the Formula Mazdas had the RX8 engine not the RX7 engine.

there are two mazdas. the club car (SCCA), older steel tube frame. and the pro car (star mazda series), carbon fiber, much newer tech, they are the ones with the RX8 engines.

    I agree...

I did the race school at Skip Barber a while back. The cars don't have speedometers and laps weren't timed, so I asked the instructors about how fast are these fomula dodge race cars....or what kinda street car would we need to keep up with these things.

"That might almost be able to keep up", and he pointed to a 360CS in the parking lot.

Yeah I remember I raced a star mazda race car at a west coast star mazda race at willow springs raceway. The best time I did was a 1:20.8 and the polesitter did a 1:20.2. I have heard the 360 challenge cars best time was 1:22 something. The top speed of a star Mazda is 135 mph, but it just carries so much more speed in the corners than a Ferrari challenge.

    Noel,

I remember when I first drove the FM at Gingerman and the instructor at the time (Jody Lift) commented about how a recent Lambo outing only managed lap times in the mid-upper 1:30s. Then, last year one of the car mags did a comparison there between the 360, the Fort GT and something else, maybe a Porsche. Same results, basically. It goes to show you the value of low polar moment. I think the track record there is still 0:59 when Paul Tracy drove his Penske CART racer there. Now, a track like Road America on the other hand...

BTW--how much fun have you been having in the FM?!

    Gilles,

formula mazdas have been a blast. they are faster, cheaper, and safer than tracking my 360 or my cobra and i have less to worry about. if anyone wants to go racing i think they are a good idea. i.e. a better idea than most.
