Lots of bits and pieces but not a difficult job at all. I have a gearbox noise I thought was the carrier bearings but they checked out fine so I will need to remove the trans and do the pinion bearings. I am happy with how user friendly these cars are to work on. Plus having a shop full of tools doesn't suck.
Is it a gearbox noise or is it from your headers? If you have cats in your headers, a weird noise that sounds like a gear could be your headers falling apart. I managed to do my belt service without removing the seats. It was a lot easier that way.
No its a whine at highway speeds. Why wouldn't you remove a few bolts and plugs to have so much more room with the seats removed? I like to have plenty of room.and it only takes a few more minutes.
My operating theory for working on old mechanical systems is never take out a bolt or connector that isn't absolutely necessary. It's just a chance to break something. I had zero problems doing the belt change with the seats in place. It was comfortable and I had plenty of room. For a Modena, I think the seats have to come out but for the Spider, sitting back there fine.
I have a question for the OP. When you did your belts, did you check the cam timing? I have asked this question on other threads and was told that some techs do and some don't on the 360 as it really wasn't a WSM procedure as it was on the 355. And if you did, was it difficult to do with the engine in? I couldn't imagine trying to check/adjust cam timing and do cam seals on a 355 with the engine in.
Coupe owner here, I agree, to do all the belts I take the seats out, for just an inspection or alternator belt swap I'll keep them in.
If you take the seats out you are tempted to get in the car. Then you stand a very good chance of getting it dirty. You also have to reinstall the seats. After 10 or so times you realize its just as easy with seats in place and there are no dirty carpets or door panels. Faster, easier, less damage and just as good a job in less time. And if I didn't take it out I am not responsible for it. No dings in door openings from seat tracks or scraped leather from door latches. Win win. There are good reasons doctors are constantly inventing less invasive procedures for surgery. Cars are not a bunch different.
I had no issues at all. Came out and went in just fine. I will continue doing it my way and you do it yours.
Question for you Brian. We all know why we check/adjust cam timing on the 355, that subject has been beaten to death . Why in your opinion doesn't Ferrari suggest doing the same for the 360 if the engines are similar. Just my curiosity. Thanks.
